Having dogs and a house with no Fence? pros & Cons.

My names Sean, been With Rksport for a while, I am not the owner I just get the fun part of being able to go on the forums all day.

Anyways, I been considering moving east for a while, but every home I find has no fence around the backyard. I have two mastiffs, good behavior and all, but will chase a cat or run up too another dog if they see one, however they have to poo and pee like anything else.

So, how do you guys get around this, do you just let your dogs out and other neighbors accept the fact a dogs pissing in their backyard or front yard?

Where I live we all have gated backyards, I think it's part of code out here.

I know the answer to alot of this, The dog shouldn't go outside if it's not trained off a leash, pick up the crap if its in someones yard, i know all this. Just wondering if it's been a problem for some people and what's the best way around it, my dogs are only inside when I am home, other then that they're outside.

Fences are expensive, some people told me it's offensive to some neighbors to put up a fence when no one else does, As i think it would look funny.

I heard about electric fences, my dogs know for zero pain tolerance to those things, not sure if it would work...

Thanks

Simple solution is to take your dog out on a leash when it needs to go, unless you can put up a fence.

I would ask your neighbors about putting up a fence (be sure to let them know the reason). If they don't want a solid fence, maybe put up a chain link run that you can walk your dogs out to, let it in, then go back inside for a few minutes until the dogs are done.

Good luck!

You could ask someone that has an electric fence if you can test it on your dogs. It only takes a few times & those dogs know where (not) to go.

My neighbor uses the petsafe shock collar it feels like taking a needle and pricking yourself for 2 seconds.

Before it strikes and the dog gets near the it beeps ( beep beep beep beep )
as he/she gets closer it gets more steadily and faster when its hitting/striking its soliding beeping.

After a few times the dog gets to where he hears the first beep and backs off.

then its like he wont even get near the spot even if you place food in the area.

My neighbor even though he doesnt need to use the collar anymore he puts the collar on the dog as a reminder even though it never gets used as in shocking him.

Me and my neighbor held the collar and walked across the wire before we let the dog. imagine a sharp prick. The dog wont yelp just jump back and look like WTF.

it works everytime.

Ill sell ya mine, unless you pay the $$$ to have a trainer work with the dog for several weeks I don't know anyone who had it work, including me.

My dog would just run right through at top speed, then not wanna come back in.

I now use a leash runner system, got like a clothes line but its ground lvl, which give the dogs almost full range of the back yard but still tied up.

Thanks everyone for your ideas and what you do. I think the shock collar would work for the reason of going outside for a short period of time.

I like the idea of putting up a fence and plaing dumb, hahah that was funny.

i don't mind the long leash idea, but with two dogs i can see a issue there. " Tangle"

I understand that you don't want to offend your neighbors by putting up a fence (and kudos to you for being so conscientious!), but I'm sure they'd understand given your circumstance. Just make sure to go around and meet all of them when you move in and I'm sure you'll get along fine.

I think loose dogs would offend the neighbors much more than installing a fence. We spent 6 grand on a fence for the backyard when we bought our house nearly 4 years ago. Wouldn't have it any other way. Good fences make good neighbors.

Hey, its your house, long as its legal, survey the land and make sure they stick on your side, even giving up some room if need be, like don’t chop into their rose bushes for an extra ft of width. And put up a real nice fence. Not a chicken wire one I like the 6-8ft fences with a 2ft+ width of lattés on top. Really sets it off. And make sure to put the nice side out, ugly side in or get doubled sided. Then make sure n have it all landscaped too so its nice. Then move in and make nice.

It will be easier then being there a few months then doing it.

And id check, electric fences don’t cancel out the leash laws in some areas, where the dog has to be physically attached to something when outside. And while most are tame as a mouse, them dogs are HUGH. Them neighbors might bitch more over the dogs, then a fence once they see em. You can also use that as part of the excuses. Realtor said we had to put one up

Some people dont like dogs. You should buy a house only if it has or you can put up a fence. Its responsible ownership of having a dog.

In NY state anyway, if you let your dog out off leash and it bites someone or hurts their dog YOU ARE LIABLE.............PERIOD! There was a case on one of the court TV shows about it. They can be on your property, but if they run away from you and do not listen, they are going to get in trouble!

Put up a fence and save yourself the headache and enjoy the privacy. That is BS about neighbors hating fences. If you moved in next to me, I would ask you to put up a fence if your dogs came charging to the property line every time I walked out with or without my dogs. Do not use stuff as an excuse why not to spend the cash. With Big Dogs comes Big responsibility, do the right thing......FENCE OR LEASH..........period.

FYI - if your dog goes into a red zone when he see's another animal, those collars do NOTHING. A friend of mine had his Rotty run right through the shock point and fight with a neighbors dog, he got sued and lost, he had to pay medical bills for his dog and the neighbors dog.......Just over $3,000.00......Now he has a real fence.

Unless its a money issue I agree put up a fence and enjoy your dogs.
Just go introduce yourself to your neighbors put a good memory in there head of how nice you are and install your fence.

Besides if you drive a camaro they may not like you because they drive a mustang lol dont hold back in life because you are affraid of what others think. Your dogs deserve a good yard to run and play in.
