If you can get a great deal with a closeby dealer, I'd purchase closer to home. If not, I'd explore the forum dealers. If you buy locally, take off a few days from work and enjoy a nice road trip. There have been some reports of members who've had uncooperative service departments, because they didn't purchase the car there. If you have any problems, it helps to have bought the car where you're having service performed.

Thanks much.
You could make the purchase hear in Oregon. (No sales tax) but you would then have to pay tax when you register in Ohio.

I was working in Wyoming when my car came in to the dealer in Oregon. Flew home, got the car, drove a few hundred miles locally for break in , then drove it back to Wyoming. It was worth the trip.

You have to pay tax on it when you register the car in your state of residence, I do believe. There are some very good dealers in Ohio. I got a killer deal from the GM dealer in Marion, OH.

I bought mine in Michigan and drove home to Indianapolis, In. Two things that were learning points. The paper work that was sent to me by the dealer so I could go to my license branch and get plates and title was not notarized (not required in Michigan). I had to send it back to the dealer so they could notarize it and they overnighted it back to me and everything was fine. The sales tax differnce between the two states were diffferent so I had to the difference out of my pcket. oooh that hurt! That's my experience.

Had a customer from Wyoming fly in and drove home. Took he and his wife 2 days and put on 1200 miles. He loved it, but he was planning it from the time he ordered it.

You'll have to pay sales tax when you register it in Ohio. Some states may collect a portion of the tax and you pay the rest there. As for paperwork, most dealers here that deal with out of state customers are familiar with whats necessary. I have a title service that can do the license and title work for my customers, so they don't even have to go when they get home. Works out great, even in difficult states like California. Whatever you choose to do, you'll certainly enjoy the ride.

My Dad buys his Corvettes in AZ and then drives back to Idaho. It's not a big deal at all beyond making sure you understand your salestax (as someone mentioned).

Works out GREAT!!

Many have come from OH (four I think) to buy from me because I honor all GM discounts and rebates. I guess that isn't so popular in Ohio for some reason...
I'm the ONE. It was about 1300 miles back to Houston (Thanks again LBR), I went ahead and paid the MI tax, that way it was calculated into the financing. When I regestered it in Tx I had to pay .33 cents more to make up the diff in MI tax and TX tax. Check to see how much tax you have to pay locally and then check with the dealer on how much their local taxes will be. Also make sure your state will accept you paying taxes in another state.
Finally, yes i went out of state to get the car I wanted for many reasons, but the drive back was fun. If that's what you want to do, then do it.

It doesn't matter what state you buy it in. You pay taxes to the state it's registered in usually at time of registration. I say it would make for a nice vacation. Heck you could go to kentucky and visit the corvette plant tour, hit up vegas, and by the time you get her home she'll be all broken in!

I flew to Buffalo NY and drove my car from Basil Chevrolet all the way to Cincinnati. It was the best 2 days of my life....

I paid Ohio taxes on the car when I registered it. Did not pay NY taxes...

Did you check the math? Chances are you were or will be charged the difference. If not good for you you snuck one threw!

True, true. I can't vouch for other states. In Missouri, the department of revenue doesn't care where you bought the car. You pay the sales tax at the license office when you get your permanent tags. The MO dealers sell you a temp tag (21 day) if you are a resident. Out of staters will get an "in transit" tag for the drive home. That and your bill of sale will work in case you get stopped by "the man".

I ordered my car in October in Massachusetts and got a new job in Colorado before it was built. The drive back was awesome but getting a temp tag was a nightmare. I had to contact the Senator to get a special exception. Go down to your DMV and make sure your drive back will be legal.
