whats this thing called 'rpm matching' lets say im in first gear and i go up to 6000, when im shifting up what should the engine be in when i engage the next gear?? i think if the rpms are matched perfectly to the speed of the driveshaft then the shift would be smoothest
rpm matching is for downshifting (you COULD use it to shift into a higher gear, but coming from a lower gear you don't really 'match' so much as you just let the rpms come down). It's one of the premises behind double clutching. It is the SOLE premise behind shifting without using the clutch what-so-ever.

Say you're cruising at 70 mph in 6th gear. You need to pass, so you drop it down. You can go to 5th, 4th, 3rd (2nd if you should desire but that's pushing it). The RPM to go 70 mph in all of those gears is different, or rather they are all higher than the rpm going 70 in 6th gear. So say we want to get by quickly and are going to drop it into 3rd gear. Push in the clutch, push in the accelerator to get about 4000-4500 rpm on the engine, then let off the clutch. You have now rev-matched.

I sometimes shift from 1st to 3rd at about 3500. I am steping on it most of the time, so I don't really notice. I don't like to loat my engine shifting at low speeds.

What he said. Its sometimes known as "blipping the throttle", so you don't get a lurch when you drop it down into a higher gear. IF you get the rev's up before you disengage the clutch, you're powertrain will have less to compensate for.

I cruise between a little over 1000 RPM and 2500 RPM. Not under 1000 for any reason.

If I am over 2500 RPM it is probably for a reason. More RPM's are used when power is needed.

My normal shift range is in the 2300-2500 range unless I am "getting on it." Once in the gear I wish to be in, i try to keep my revs low. Torque Montser has been mentioned here several times for good reason. The range of torque ont hese babies is sufficient enough to allow decent acceleration from lower RPM's.

Having said that, I tend to drive for economy whenout on the highway. Yeah, I love the power, and use it when appropriate. (Which is a very subjective criteria.- Basically when I need a speed rush.)

It is basically how I can achieve 26.8 mpg on many of the Interstates around here.

i shift around 4-4500 rpm when accelerating but will cruise around 3000rpm. i find the v6 a little lethargic below 3000 rpm. i have no use for 6th gear.

What everyone else said (Shift around 2500-3000, cruise around 1500). Feels good, tastes great.
