Angry Factory Oil filter stuck?

I'm trying to remove the oil filter on my SS but it just wont come off.

Lookup 'UP' at it I'm turning it counter clockwise which is usually how I'd 'loosen' something but it barely moves. I think I've got it maybe 1/2 a turn but it just doesnt seem to be coming off.

My Filter top wrench doesnt fit this stock filter so I'm having to do it the hard way. Considering you usually do just over hand tight to put new ones on I dont understand why this one is so tough.

Any tips on this? (and am I doing something wrong?)

Try grabbing it with a piece of sandpaper. Works every time for me, I don't even use a filter wrench.

Normally I wouldnt need a wrench either but this one almost seems welded on. This is the first one I've done in a few years though.

I am right in assuming they come off in the same direction a normal nut would? (counterclockwise to loosen)

I didn't change the oil on mine, but can you try and get it with the old strap wrench kind?

I haven't changed the oil on mine yet ,but I usually put a screw driver through side of them and use it to loosen tight ones. I don't know if you have room to do that as I haven't even looked at the underside of mine yet. If not get an oil wrench that fits.

Finally got it. Hammered a screw driver through it and wrenched it off. Man that thing was over tight.

Be glad it too awhile for you to do that (or unless it was sitting for a long time) otherwise that would have been HOT!

This may work on a camaro since it is downward, don't do it on a top or side facing filter, might get metal shavings where you don't want them. Also be careful, if it is on extremely tight you may just shear through the filter - done that also - someone had forgotten to oil the gasket when they put it on the car and it basically melted onto the pan

As for removing it - sandpaper works great, a rubber jar opener can work too. It is LEFT (county clockwise - I have changed my oil a couple times now) The stock one was definitely tough.

If those methods are unavailable or don't work, warm up the motor. It will be hot, but things tend to loosen up. Try turning it (I'd wear gloves made for heat) - see if you can get it loose, then let the car cool down a bit before removing the rest of the way. However - this is of course a huge problem if you already drained the oil which is the procedure I always do, drain oil then take filter off.

A pipe strap will work too if you have one of them.

Good to hear - the stock ones may all be very tight, I know mine was a PITA to get off.

I hate when that happens. I've had to resort to chizzeling off a filter before too, after doing all of the above. What a PITA... Good job getting it off

Good point about the inverted filters. I keep forgetting some cars have the goofy set up. I wouldn't be that worried about side mounts. Not a very good chance of metal getting in motor with that.

Was your engine hot?

A cold filter will be stuck on like concrete. Get the motor nice and hot from a long drive and grip it with a quality filter wrench.
