DIC Compass Problem on 2SS - Camaro5 Chevy Camaro Forum / Camaro ZL1, SS and V6 Forums

The compass in the DIC display quit yesterday. The owner's manual said it is part of the Onstar info but that seems wrong. The car should have a compass regardless of your Onstar status.

Anyone else have a problem with their compass?

did it show 3 dashes or say CAL on the display?
If it has the 3 dashes you need to take it in for service, if it says CAL just take it out and drive it some.

Where did you see it say in the manual it was part of OnStar?, It does use GPS information to update but not OnStar. make sure you are outside when viewing your compass, If you were in your garage it may not work.

I think I remember hearing my salesperson tell me that the compass was through On-Star...but technically, no one should have lost service yet since it is free for the first year, and one year ago we were still counting down to production. (man, where did the time go?)

It isn't though On-Star. It just uses the GPS antenna.

The display is showing two dashes ie --. The car was outside when it quit working yesterday. The car was outside all day today.

This is from page 4-8 in the manual.

Compass

The vehicle may have a compass
display on the Driver Information
Center (DIC). The compass is

Mine does not mention anything about Onstar on any of the pages about the compass, It does mention it uses the GPS signal and the Satellite Radio ANTENNA, that is all.

It needs to be more than just outside, It needs to be driven while outside with a clear sight to the sky, It is possible when yours quit you were not recieving a clear gps signal.

If it is still out tomorrow after driving to work, I assume it needs serviced. I was hoping to not have any problems with the car so I could brag on GM quality.....

You are welcome, I don't understand why one manual says it is part of onstar and another one does not... that is weird...

Well any new car model will have some glitches, I don't care if it is GM or Toyota or Honda or anything (they are just better at supressing public knowlege of their problems..or at least used to be better

), sometimes you find them early and sometines years later... But in the big scheme of things the compass not working is really a minor glitch...

one thing you can try is try using the Directions and connections part of Onstar, if it cannot give you correct instructions then you may have an antenna problem.. is your XM working? It uses the same Satelitte antenna...

The XM is working.
The GPS must be magic! It is working fine today after being down for 2 days.

I spoke too soon. I got in the car to go home tonight and it was not working again. I drove 8 miles home and it still was not working......
