OIL CHANGES

would you be ok with taking your camaro to a quick lube place to get your oil changed, or do you always take it to the dealer? I usually take it to the dealer, but was considering the other option, but wanted to see if people thought that was ok. I have done it many many many times with my other vehicles, rarely took them to dealer, but was just curious.

Uh oh! Beware asking this one for the fast lube place! Jk...

I NEVER would! I know some people who used to work there who were competent, and would tell me about others who knew nothing. It is really such an easy procedure to do yourself with some homemade ramps or a good set of race ramps...

The dealers charge WAY too much IMO!

Why risk it?

I don't have the means to do it myself or I probably would. I put in Mobil 1 oil last time I got it changed and from what I've read that is what we should put in our prized vehicle right. It's a good oil. Still thinking about taking it to quick place.

Well, if that's what you have to do, yes Mobil 1 is the way to go and I would sit next to my baby and watch every move they make! :(

Ooohh I will trust me. Speaking of people being not on the "smart" side this goes for the dealer to...funny quick story....took my car to the "dealer..yes dealer", to get my exhaust put on and they drove it back to the "holding area", and as I was waiting for them to bring the car to where it needed to be so I could go over some things with the install guy, this kid comes up to me and says "man your car wont start". I was i disbelief, because they had just drivin it back there and I had no problems driving it there. So he insisted that it wouldn't start. So getting frustrated I said "come on man lets go to the car". I got in pushed the clutch in, turned the key and vvvvrrrroooommm, crancked right over. I looked at him and said "what's the problem" did you not push the clutch in. His response to me was.......are you ready for this one:p opcorn:......."He didn't know it was a stick". Do you think I was a little uneasy with leaving my car with this guy! None the less the install came out perfect and I was pleased.

Personally, and have reiterated this several times...

I invested $300 in enough oil and filters (Mobil1 oil/filters) and Pennzoil Platinum at 3.29-3.99 qt. and filters at $9.99 Enough for 9 oil changes.

Then you buy a great aluminum low profile jack and you are still $400 ahead over $90-$110 oil changes.

I go an buy my oil and filter at Wal-Mart or Autozone (whoever has the better price or sale) and spend the $38-45 and then take it to the dealer where the charge me $10 plus tax to change it.

When i had my 05 Ram, i took it to the dealer from the first oil change to the last before trading it in on my Camaro. Always had great luck. The dealer wants 75 dollars for a syn oil change using mobil 1, they said they use mobil 1 in all the camaros there.

As mentioned, buy your own oil/filters and either do it yourself or take to a mechanic/shop that you trust, or could trust in the future (if you've never been there). Avoid "fast lubes" (idiots) and dealers (sometimes idiots and WAY over-priced). Go to the mechanic/shop (I go to a local tire shop that does only tires, brakes, shocks, oil change, etc.). You get the SAME knowledgable guys everytime. They get to know you and your car. They won't try to sell you things and work that does not need to be done. They should only charge you a small fee if you bring your own ($10-20)...and the place I go to does free tire rotations if you buy your tires from them also. My wife just had a flat in her car and I assumed they would charge...they did it for free since I bought the tires from them (and was a regualr customer). I know I'm lucky to have found a place like this (RW Tire in central NJ...look them up), but there are others if you look. Good luck.

Thanks for the info, i desided to buy my own oil and have the dealer do it for 15 bucks. I can get 5qts of Mobil 1 Syn oil for $24 and another quart for lets say $7, Book says i need 6qts. So I should be able to get it all done for less than 50 hopefully, alot better than 75 IMO.
