as a parent with a soon to be 16 that hasnt earned the right to drive, let a lone a car. when we were looking for something for him our insurance agent turned us on to classic cars/trucks.

if it was built pre 1976 the insurance would be cheaper & wouldnt be a rough on us, & our toys (corvettes & Camaros)

I would ask your son if he is willing to hold off, until he is a SR in high school (for a graudation present they will still be around) then go get him a nice used pick up something older than he is. or a older mucsle cars.

& ALSO TAKE HIM TO THE LOCAL TRACK TO allow him to see what happens when the power can do. over the last 10yrs I have learn that when you start to slide you learn how to get out of it. lol

I guess it really does come down to trusting my son to be a safe, responsible driver imposing quick and severe consequences if he acts untrustworthy.
It's so hard to know, though, how he is going to act when such a powerful machine is put into his hands. Even knowing him the way I do, and he's a good kid, boys like to push limits. It's quite a dilemma since I said he could get one, and after that test drive (driven by the chevy salesman), my stomach is still on the road behind us. I want to be a parent of my word, ya know? I should've done my homework well in advance.

The average 16 yr old does not know how to handle a car with that kind of power. It is irresponsibile towards him and the others on the road. Mulehead7 hit the nail on the head.

dont think that, sometimes we have to set limits for our kids until we feel they are ready.

get him a starter car that he can play with with out you worrying about him.

a v6 4th gen or 3rd gen camaros come a dime a dz But if he wants later he can put more power to it.

No matter what hes going to push the limits of the car, but if he learns to respect the power it will be better all around wtih out spending 20-35k on a new car. Not only that insurance will be through the roof on a newer car.

My first car at 16 was a 300hp v8 Pontiac Trans Am.

I ended up totaling it when I was 19

I agree. When I turned 16 I got an '04 Ford Mustang. I got used to driving, no speeding tickets, and no wrecks. Now I'm 19 and I just got a new camaro! I could imagine getting this car when I was 16, and I probably would have wrecked it right off the bat. So definetly go with a used car first!!!

as bad as your son wants the car,i would not start him out in a camaro.his buddies will talk him into god knows what.speed kills.16 year olds don't always make the best decisions.i would rather have my son healthy,in a slow car, rather than injured in a fast car.just my opinion.

Everybody's first car is supposed to be pretty crummy anyway... You never start with the real nice ones. The Camaro V6 is way too powerful for a new, young driver.

My first car was when I was 18. A 1976 Toyota Celica Liftback. 96 horsepower.

Personally I think it really comes down to you knowing your son. I have a 17 yr old daughter that I will be teaching how to drive stick shift in my SS. Although this is not going to be her car, I think that I know her well enough that I would be able to trust her to drive my car and be respectful of the power it has. I'm not in a position that I can afford to buy a new 5th gen for her 1st car so we are most likely going to get her a used 4th gen.

make him understand what horsepower is before he gets a car like this. As a 17 year old myself i can say that he needs to know that there will be consequences and conditions that come along with his actions and the car. I dont think that speed is going to be the problem, i think torque will be what gets him in trouble.
If he feels he can handle it, chances are at 16...he cant, he just really wants the car and will yes you until he gets it. All i can say is make sure he knows the consequences because In the end, you are the parent, and if he cant handle it, pull the plug. you cant buy love, keeping him safe is better than making him happy.
i dont know your son, but i do think a nice compromise would be if he got the car under the condition that he had to get used to it with you in the car.
just my .02
