Hey the 92' Z28 was plenty powerful, lighter than the 5thgen.
Even if someone is a good kid, the power can be intoxicating. I'm not sure what to tell the original poster.

I am an insurance agent in Chicago and I have a son who will be 16 soon and he is a GREAT kid, smart and responsible. That being said, I would NEVER buy a young driver a NEW car, much less a sporty car. I can tell you from over 20 years of auto insurance experience that buying love for your son or daughter through a new fast car is a really BAD idea. I have many clients that have gone out and bought Johnny a new fast car, usually because Mom and Dad got divorced and Dad wants to be the cool parent and within the first 2 years, Johnny has had a bad accident. How about buying Johnny a new car when he graduates.....COLLEGE!!!!!! Helping your kids go on to college is the single best thing you can give them. Career choices so they can land on their own two feet! Also, in my agency, the kids that pay their portion of their auto insurance are much better drivers!!!!! There are some great driving contracts that parents can download and have their kids sign, remember parents, every action has a repercussion. I know it's harder to be a tough parent, but tough love is what kids really need from us. They will thank you for it later in life, when they can appreciate your actions more. I know I drive much more agressively in the Camaro than I do in my Explorer. Horsepower is a drug!

In my opinion i would not buy him this car, I have LS but you still have 304 Horse power on the car. He need to drive some old car for a while to get good at and get some more experience on drive. I've drive an old car since i was 17 now i'm 21 and just got this LS. I think LS suppose to take out quicker than the SS, because of it light weight. But hey he's your son i cant decide what you can and you can't do. Hehehe, the camaro do comes with onstar. the LS do have Speed limit warning thingy, but your son probably figure out how to change it. Be warn tho if you get this car for him. the view on the back is hard to see and need to get use to. And since he's 16 driving it to high school, all the kid in school going to race him. Get jealous of him maybe mess with his car?. But hey if i was him i wanted that car too. At first i got the car i was like nah i'm not going to race any one. well a day later i raced the 350Z. XD that's what its feel to have a camaro, you just need to race any one that want to race you LOL. Oh his insurance giong to be high T_T.

You should do your chores because as a member of a family, you have responsibility. I don't expect my kids to pay me for the meals I provide them, so why should they expect me to pay them for the chores they do? Giving payment for chores sends the wrong message, and I would speculate is the reason for the sense of entitlement and diminishing interest in higher education in young people today.

I am saying this by the way from experience. I grew up with an incredible sense of entitlement, and I only really got my act together in my 30s. Heck - that's a long time. I would hope for your children and mine that they will learn that lesson sooner.
LOL you're like my parent. They told me to go get a job since i'm 14 and don't give me any allowance XD. Don't get me wrong they're not poor, they're above average income. i didn't regret that they did that, now that i'm in military. Basic training was a cake, because of those 12-14 hours of training >.>. Heck my MTI didn't know that i was there until the end of the week. WTF!!!

Start him off in a 4th gen Camaro/Firebird V6. Then in a few years he can upgrade to the 5th gen V8.

IMO, a 16 yo has little if no business behind the wheel of this type of car (or anything generating that much hp or torque, even the V6). While he may be a very responsible young man, the second you put that kind of temptation out there, it becomes a challenge to show off in front of friends, or worse, to end up in a drag match with someone who pulls up alongside him and "dares him" to race. There are enough guys here on this website in the 18-24 category who already fall into this category, and a few who have been lucky that when using poor judgement, all they did was total the car.

Get a reliable secondhand vehicle for a learning experience - once he graduates from college and you still want to reward him for his achievements (and he still wants this car), pay 1/2 and let him pay for the rest. He'll appreciate it more. And too bad if "all the other kids are getting new cars."

I like that idea!! Might have to borrow it in 5 years...
