Ford's Answer to the Caprice: Taurus Police Interceptor

BREAKING: First images of Ford's new Taurus-based Police Interceptor revealed!

Later today, Ford will officially unveil its new Police Interceptor at a private fleet sales event in Las Vegas, but the first images of the new vehicle were posted this morning on the company's website. As has been rumored for some time, Ford will be adapting the Taurus to take over from the aged Crown Victoria which is finally being euthanized in September 2011.

At this point, we don't have any mechanical details on the new cop car. We wouldn't be surprised if Ford offers the Interceptor in two forms. A naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 version with front-wheel drive could serve for all those local applications like liaison officers, supervisors, etc. where extra performance is not needed. The true Interceptors for highway patrol applications will probably use the SHO powertrain with the 3.5-liter Ecoboost V6 and all-wheel drive.

This twin-turbo cop car would provide the first real performance challenge to the increasingly popular Dodge Charger while likely getting much better fuel economy, and we presume that the Blue Oval will field the new units with the obligatory upgrades, including a more robust suspension, cooling system, electrical, and hopefully, brakes. We should have all the answers for you around lunch time.
More pictures at the link.

Front looks very aggressive. I like it. The car seems to sit really high, or is that a photo problem? Ford has done a nice job with the new Taurus. I do wish they would have named it something else.

My opinion?

Ford just handed the police car market to Chevy. Maintenance costs for the Caprice will most likely be much less than maintaining an AWD, twin-turbocharged Taurus.

That interceptor looks pretty tough and intimidating!

I hate to say it, but the more police cars I see of a certain style, the less I like seeing the consumer counterpart of the car on the road. For example, I let my foot off the gas whenever I see an impala, or a charger on the road.

Do you think it affects sales?

I'm looking for a white Impala precisely for this reason.

No respectable police agency would drive that.

Uhhhh.... It's a Taurus. We cops always make fun of the other agencies that don't have "real" police cars. A quick test drive on an EVOC course will tell you why. They drive like crap compared to Chevy or Crown Vic. Even the SUV handle better.

And just for the record I could give a $hit less about gas mileage. That's admin's concern, not patrol's.

If your talking of the Taurus of the past I completely agree. Are you saying you have first hand knowledge that the new Taurus is a terrible handling car?

Nope. Just saying I have first hand knowledge about how the Taurus is perceived by cops. Agencies that buy them only do so because they can't afford real police cars. Just like muscle cars, police cars need a certain size and look or they just don't measure up. This car will never catch on for that very reason.

Well I'm a tax payer too ya know. Realistically the way cops drive and use police cars doesn't exactly put high gas mileage at the top of the list. Besides our cars are full of a bunch of extra equipment adding a lot of weight. We need a big car with lots of power... not a Prius.

As far as size and looks I don't see the problem. This is a completely different animal than Ford's previous POS. I think we need to see some feedback from officers on this new vehicle. If you guys still feel the same way, then so be it, but I wouldn't judge this car based on past one's. You might just miss out on a terrific cop car.

Well to be totally honest I have yet to drive a terrific cop car so perhaps it's worth a shot.
