International standard ISO 7736 defines a standard size for car audio head units. The standard was originally established by the German standards body Deutsches Institut fur Normung, and is therefore commonly referred to as the "DIN car radio size". It was adopted as an international standard in 1984.
Head units generally come in either single DIN (1 DIN), which is 50 mm high; or double DIN (2 DIN), which is 100 mm high."

LTAudio... awesome work. the one disappointment when i ordered the car was the lack of a real radio or the ability to do a double din easily. i miss my old alpine w205 in my jeep jk and the new W900 they have is sweet.

anyway, i hope you can get some of these refined and sold cause the metra one sucks IMO. i love the factory controls. I am spending money on other things right now, but ill check back when i can.

thanks for the dedication.

LT1Jeep, since I generally dont measure anything in mm, and 1 inch is 25.4mm, hence single DIN I was stating is 2 inches, which would be 50.8mm. So im off by .8mm. In imperial meausrement, people arent going to say 2 and 1/16 inch tall, its a lot easire to round it to 2 inches. I guess its just easier (for me at least) to say 2 inches, not 50mm. That has been the "adopted" definition of most stereo guys, Double Inch, insead of blah blah Normung. Its easier to remember, and the acronym works.
Thats all.

Did anything ever come of the aftermarket company that was interested in picking up this design/product from you?

nope. I worked with the engineers at Metra, and even with their R&D capabilities, the stock knob kit would have been stupid expensive, so thats why they came up with their own design. I have the only stock appearing kit out there. I dont think anyone or any company is going to try it.

and at this point, it's the $1800 + the stock headunit to be modified, right?

no its 1800 for the complete kit. Minus the aftermarket headunit. If you ever wanted to go back to stock, its about 350 for the dash piece from GM. Thats the only thing that gets modified with the kit, everything else is plug and play.

Someone will mass produce one that looks factory someday soon.. Might as well be you right? :-)

Someone will pick it up.. Want me to get you a list of ABS manufacturers in china that can do these no problem? I have alot of friends in overseas manufacturing of small product.

I have contacts both locally and oversees, to make PCB's, dash pieces, everything. Its the assembly that is the most time consuming. Each LED from the stock board has to be moved over, as well as connectors to retain the stock board and link it to the new dash board. There are about 125 wires that go from the dash to the retention unit, and each end of those need to be soldered, and thats just the one piece. If I have all the parts in front of me, it still takes about 20 hours to put it all together. Plus the price of parts. I would LOVE to see someone come out with anything close.

Keep in mind, this isnt the regular, simple plastic dash kit that we are all used to. I wish it was that easy.

Just out of curiosity's sake (not that i don't believe what you are saying) but why do you have to move the LED's from the stock board, rather than just use new ones, and leave the original board in tact? is it just for keeping the remote box as small as possible? I can tell you have the BEST kit out there, just curious as to the workings.

The light-blue color, also called ice blue, is VERY hard to find from any supplier. I have searched for days and not found anything. Also, since the stock board still runs the leds, if I dont take them off the old board and put them on mine, the system has to drive twice the amount of LEDS, which shouldnt be a problem, but Id rather not take that chance. The remote box is about 9x7x2. It houses the stock board, all the radio controls, and the stock screen. Just in case you ever need to change setting in the car. Heres a pic of it:

Keep in mind this is the Gen 1 box, the Gen 3 is a bit different, this has just the screen on one side, and the controls on the other, kinda hard to use, the Gen 3 has everything on one side. Ill have to see if I have a picture of it.

ok i found a pic of the Gen3 box, as well as a pic of SOME of the wiring that has to be done, just to give you guys an idea of how hard GM made this car to do a kit in.

20 hours I believe it!!
And at an average automotive work billing rate of $75 an hour that's $1,500 in your time. Plus parts as you mention.
