50mph on a blind curve? What kind of curve was it? An off-ramp?
Just a little confused as to where you would be going 50 especially on a blind curve.
(Not trying to shoot at you or anything, i was just curious so dont take it the wrong way)

You swerve, and you leave the road way then you run the risk of a lot more serious damage and injury than if you just hit the deer. I know your first instinct is to swerve or move out of you lane, but you need to learn to fight that urge... My understanding is that once you leave the road way, the insurance rules change... If you stay on the road and hit the deer, it is a pretty simple comprehensive claim... basically you are not at fault, different deductible and usually doesn't affect your rates (I have had a number of these claims over the last few years and my rates never changed!) Swerve and go off the road and hit a tree... now it becomes a collision claim.. and the insurance company can say you were at fault, raise your rates, and you may have a different deductible for collision... This may be why you are having "issues"... At least that is how things have been explained to me...

And for the record... I once hit 4 deer at ONCE! One word that sums it up... GRUESOME...

I know this advice is after the fact and I'm not trying to rub it it.. but perhaps someone reading this may learn...
Good advice.

Blind curve + dark road = slow the F down!

Not saying the man screwed up. Heck when I took my Drivers ED in Oklahoma I swerved to miss a dog and after I got back into my lane my football coached yelled at me and since I haven't swerved to miss anything. But what I'm getting at is he is 17 totaled a car which will probably raise his insurce which his parents are probably paying for (don't know guessing). Do you think it is right or far for him to ask them to pay more? Besides would you personally give a 17 year old an SS little lone a 20 year old. Also I'm not trying to say because I'm 20 I'm a better driver because I know I still have a lot to learn out on the road (just incase you are getting that idea).

I don't think the first picture with the red lines was his. Just a picture he used to illustrate where he sustained damage.

This is all true. If you would've stayed on the road and hit the deer it wouldn't have been your fault. You would still pay a deductible but it wouldn't go against you. Since you swerved and went off the road the accident changes and becomes your fault and goes against you.

I hit a dog on a two lane highway doing about 60. I did swerve slightly and luckily hit him with the far right of my bumper. If I would've hit him straight ahead the airbags would've deployed and been way more damage. Since I didn't leave the road and hit anything else it was not considered my fault and insurance didn't change. The insurance agent explained to me about swerving and living the road would've gone against me.

BTW: No...that wasn't in my Camaro. It was in an '01 Impala about 4 yrs ago. At first glance it doesn't look like much but look closer and you can see the bumper, fender, and wheel had to be replaced. About $2,500 worth. And yes....that's fur between the wheel and the tire.

My friend sells these

http://www.strieter-lite.com/

On the test roads not even a rat was found run over.

They really work but sadly as you will see Texas has not adopted the program.
list of states that are using them

I was refraining from saying anything but I was thinking this since the first post. maybe he's a great kid, straight A's on his report card, never gets in trouble, etc... still, no kid needs a 426HP car while he's in his teenage years. I'm basing this on my memories back to high school, pretty much every guy that I knew that had a badass car ended up totaling their badass car.

Makes me glad to live in California. I have NEVER seen a deer anywhere close to where I live.

Also shows why the insurance companies lobby hard to let hunters have fewer restrictions on hunters. The more hunters are allowed to go hunt, fewer deer on the roads causing accidents.

I'm glad everybody was ok in the accident. OP, get an SS if you want, you only live once.

Anyone of any age and with any horsepower car can total it. When i was 16 I flipped an 86 z-28 that was only running on 6 of 8 cylinders due to someone driving in the middle of the road (country road, blind turn, different story). after that i was scared to drive but finally forgot about it. Later on I bought a 300zx twin turbo that was putting down around 450 hp. Safe to say I wasn't used to the power but it was so scary to me that I respected the car. So I guess my point was that even if you are 16 or 30 or 50 a split second bad choice can wreck a vehicle no matter horsepower. Oh and btw I did hit a dear going about 50 driving to Texas Tech to visit a friend during the middle of the day. The dear jumped over one car and I clipped the ass end of it as it tried to run across the rest of the road. Only the hood was dented. good thing that car was really low.
