I think if GM did this and was able to sell at invoice price to the consumer, all of the asian competitors wouldn't be able to match it..Get rid of the dealer system and sell direct from factory, or sell all their stock to places that put in writing/contract that they will only sell the car at MSRP..

Invoice seems a bit extreme, dealers are needed for service and really most people do prefer to go look at cars, taking test drives and such. But simply providing a direct order option would effectively remove excessive dealer markups since anyone could simply tell the order no thanks I'll order from GM. At this point most dealers would decide they'd rather make the sale at ~MSRP, as even if they got a delivery fee it would certainly be less than made by selling the car at a sane price themselves.

Had the same thing happen to me ... email said they were doing MSRP ... luckly before I made an appoitment to come down, the sales guy said the dealership changed their minds and it would go at Market value at the time ... I kept looking and found a dealer that would do MSRP ..

Consider that dealers are discounting new 09 Corvette's up to $8K and you can buy a new 09 1LT for around $40K. GM and local dealers are loony if they try to mark UP an SS to near that price point.

If any SS Camaro is purchased for anything near the cost of a vette I'd buy the vette.

A dealer doesn't have to honor any form of pricing unless it is advertised, such as radio or print. Someone could send you specific pricing over an e-mail and it not mean a thing. Not unless it listed a particular stock number or VIN number, then you might have a chance.
hmm...this makes me feel uneasy. I got in writing (by email) that a dealership would sell me a camaro at MSRP and so I put down my deposit.....so you're saying that this doesn't make it a done deal? They they can retract and charge whatever they want?

I indicated to my dealer that I wasnt interested in doing business over MSRP, as another post stated, once you get into stupid money just to be first, you can buy way more car. It also sets a precedent with dealers, and I do feel they communicate with each other to exchange notes on getting more than MSRP.

Hype is a dangerous thing, it very rarely helps the buyer thats for sure.

You have to be able to walk away.

Besides at 100,000 units a year, they will be available.....just not soon enough for most of us.

I placed my order with Ed Cerepak at Putnam Chevrolet in Burlingame for MSRP. It's on the other side of the bay but it'll be worth it. Give him a call or email.

On a side note thanks for all of your information and insight. I have never owned a GM product out of my 10+ new vehicles. Please offer the SS in blue!

Federal franchise laws. Scott held a discussion about this very topic on other threads - if you search you will find.

I think franchise laws are bull&&$#, but what can we do? Nothing. Neither can GM (unless they want to go to court).

Only thing you can do, like he said, is tell any dealer that tries to mark it up or charge you any fee beyond sticker and tax/title to shove it.

I am going to bring the price guide with me to the dealer and say "hey, I know what employee price and invoice is. Why would I pay even sticker for this car?"

I don't know how long it will take me, but I'll wait untill I find someone who will sell it for less than sticker.

Good stuff thanks. I know about general anti-trust laws and the like, but nothing of franchise law. I will not pay over sticker and when I do buy I will not patronize the dealers asking obscene amounts over sticker, even if it means a drive out of town.

I'm gonna say this again -( dear GOD I need a smilie for this one too........) JUST SAY NO when a dealer asks for a price over MSRP.

There are dealers in other states that will be happy to sell you a Camaro - they can either courtesy deliver the car -- OR - better yet - make a road trip out of it -- and ENJOY your Camaro driving it home!
What if I need a warranty repair? If I take it to my local dealer, won't he be pissed off and not do a good job?
