The rumor that this color would expand has been floating around since the LE was released. If it was that much of a concern for them then they should have waited to buy.

Agreed. Alot of companies, even in different markets do low-volume test releases, and call them "limited" or "special" editions, purely to test the product's saleability. If that small run does well, then a full release follows.
