I have been told by my local mechanic that an inexpensive way to cure the quiet muffler sound and make it lower/deeper is to remove the resonators from the muffler. He told me they were duplicated in the muffler system and it would surely help to "bring the noise".
If this is true, has anyone done it? He was going to charge me $100.00 to do it. I also wanted to have him do an H pipe at the same time if possible. Would that help the sound/flow? And finally, I dont want my car to sound like a Colbalt guy down the street that when he drives by everyone shakes their head since it's sounds more like a rice rocket. I just wanted to add a little more deep sound to it. Any suggestions (other than "Buy a full exhaust") would be greatly appreciated! |

It makes sense that it would be louder. However, I'm not sure if it would sound good.. If you want loud, I'd go MRT V1, I love mine!

I don't know if we've seen videos of just the resonators removed yet... if so, I don't remember it. I know that I don't have money to keep doing something over and over, so I'd probably pick out an exhaust that I like and go with it. If you want to experiment, please take videos after each step for us! One thing to note is that there is already an H pipe on the exhaust. |

The car a comes with an "H" pipe, and $100 for two short pieces of pipe sounds a bit high.

There a few threads about the resonators. A lot of people are thinking that by removing the resonators, your exhaust will probably sound very raspy, and not good at all. If you want to experiment, and try running it without the resonators, everyone here will support you as long as you post some vids up and tell us how it sounds, lol. However, I would recommend just going with a cat-back, or an axle-back.. and swapping out the 'H' pipe with an 'X' pipe. Just keep in mind, that the V6 will never sound like a V8.. So find something that suits you. There are a few out there that offer a nice little rumble but if you're looking for that deafening, jaw dropping sound of a V8.. sorry bud. My 2 cents. |

Thanks for the advice! I'll try this out, see if it works and take some pics along the way. Stay Tuned!

Ok........here's what I have found. I put in non-resonated x-pipe as part of my new exhaust system. Temporarily for a week, we had to put the stock SS system on. This is how the car sounded then.....
We figured that was because of the non-resonated x-pipe combined with a freer flowing exhaust for a V8 engine. I need to make a vid with a better camera yet, but we then added on MRT's V2.0, now these mufflers are designed to balance out the sound coming from the engine of a V6. So the rasp went away and the car sounded more deeper and aggressive. Conclusions of my shop, friends and myself: You need resonators somewhere, either on the x-pipe or the mufflers to help with the rasp. Otherwise your car will sound like a track car on the road. Now if you use the stock V6 mufflers, the rasp won't be as bad, but it will be more than it was before and in all ranges now. I would expect the car to sound like a lawn mower.

When you get home, make sure you listen to get an idea. Don't get me wrong its a bad ass sound, but the rasp is not my thing and the drone was crazy. My friends were wild about the sound from the outside and on the inside. But the drone at 2000 rpms bothered them too. Adding the MRTs has been a definite improvement.

I'll be sure to have a listen. I can imagine that the drone would be pretty bad, ive seen a few clips with a kind of similar set up and the drone was awful but exhaust sound was decent.

I see what you mean about it sounding like a lawnmower. I guess I will just have to wait until I have enough coin to buck up and do it the right way!
