Bikes dont 'disassemble' easily enough to be worth the trouble of putting it in the trunk. Plus, most trail bikes will not fit in there even if they are disassembled. Nothing wrong with using a bike rack to transport a bike to a trail. (I wouldnt drive the car on dirt roads to get there however)

I imagine one of the universal trunk ones would work if that is what you prefer.

I tried my old trunk rack the other day and it turns out there isn't enough of a lip on the glass side of the trunk lid for a rack to hook on to.

Also on your other point, not only would a mountain bike not fit through that hole taken apart, but you'd end up breaking off your derailer and probably messing up your brakes. And who has the extra half hour to take your bike apart and put it back together. Maybe for a rare trip (i took my bike apart to fit it in the trunk of my RX-8 when I drove from Boston to Maryland for a week) but for a regular thing, thats crazy. Plus you'd end up with so much dirt in your car... ugh

You can buy a decent used vehicle for about $2,000.

I sold a 96 Ford Ranger truck for $2,300.00 about 9 months ago.

The paint on the Camaro (and probably most new vehicles) scatch too easily to be jaunting around trails with a bikerack attached.

You can buy a descent bike rack for your camaro for about $200. Also I don't have to buy insurance for the rack, I don't have to get it inspected, pay for repairs when it breaks down, put gas in it, or find a place to park it when I'm not biking. The idea of buying a car just to cart bicycles around is beyond stupid. Really. Think about what you are saying.

Well just a suggestion.

I think you will find quite a few people on this forum say that using a Camaro to cart around a bicycle in areas that your car paint will get chipped is pretty stupid.

Send us a picture of your Camaro with the bike rack and bike attached.

+1 on the receiver hitch. You can also tow a couple jets skis when you're not on the trail too.

I remember a day when people actually used their cars for transportation and utility. You don't need a truck to haul a bike, and most of these "trails" are actually paved right up to where the bike trail starts.

Paint was more durable, back in the days.

I would put a Camaro rack on the bike before I would put a bike rack on my Camaro. Don't mean to be in the Rude posts but you will ruin your investment. The gm paint on these cars is soft. I cringe just from the road pebbles on the asphalt.

I live in an apt in Buck Head and am only assigned one space for my unit. Should I look at purchasing another unit to use the extra parking spot for the beater I will be buying to tote my bike around?

Dude, roof rack that thing - then post pics and let all these old farts turn the flames on and say they would never even think of doing that to the car they have had for nearly two years now, but only have 400 miles on it because they only drive it on cruise night (weather permitting) to Ole Bob's Dinner Sock-Hop. After my GTO got totaled by some idiot girl I learned these things are just metal and you better enjoy them because you never know when they are going to leave you...yes, even you guys who keep them in the garage 365...one good storm and that tree comes crashing down on your garage, poof, camaro gone...

"Paint was not more durable back in the day" - that sh*t faded, most lacked a real clear coat, it didnt have as many paint layers for protection, not to mention not nearly as environmentally friendly...do some research before you post

I don't agree... Car's today use galvanized steel to prevent rust unlike all those cars from the 70's and 80's that are rotting away. And the reason paint chips now is because its covering the front of the car, up until the late 80's most cars had metal or plastic front bumpers not painted ones.

a $2000 car (+insurance etc) to carry a $500 bike once a week to a trail (which oviously many times the road to the trail is paved) is retarded. As well I race TT and road bikes and do Triathlons. I'm not driving on trails I'm taking the normal streets to parks etc because I can't ride my TT bike on the road.

The car isn't gonna melt. Its a CAR

I don't have to since I know everything already.

Your right though I was drawing a conclusion based on the EPA mandates of water based paint and the multitude of stories of paint chips on the Camaro.

My 96 Ford Ranger looked just a new a year ago as it probably did in 1996.

I saw this thread and realized it was old. What did you finally end up with OP, the Felt and Ibis are awesome bikes and I hope you found a solution. Some of the replies here were ludicrous. I actually use one of these: http://www.rei.com/product/722143 which works fine and no scratches so far. I've got a Fisher 29er large frame and it fits well. I wouldn't carry more than 1 bike at a time though.

i should have worded that better(not as a-hole sounding)...

I think I assumed you were one of those nostalgic-about-the-past people who blindly think everything was better in the past; that lites a fire in me.
