It really had nothing to do with the cubic inches. If you stripped everything down to the bare block, the Rat motors were larger in size, thus 'big block'.

A 400ci small block would be a smaller size engine than a 348ci big block.

To get back to the topic of the thread: a nickname for a Camaro (besides the obvious 'pony car') should be Camaro. I think the name stands alone.
