Tap Shift Related Questions
Hello All,
I have a few questions all related to Tap Shift (Sport Mode) in the 2SS V8. 1) I noticed I can launch from 3rd gear (from a dead stop). Is the computer supposed to allow this? Can this be harmful to the transmission? 2) Can you shift between 'D' and 'M' (Sport Mode) and vice versa when the car is moving ? If so, are there any speed or load thresholds at which this should not be done? 3) Is AFM (Active Fuel management) present in both modes 'D' and 'M' ? or does it work only in 'D' ? Thanks in advanced.. Joe |

Actually if you use the paddles to shift, AFM does get turned off. But putting the car in sport mode it does not.

I wish GM would make a list of details available for the 6L80 for its use in Camaro.
So many people have these questions, and it would be nice to hear detailed answers from GM. |

Totally agree! I am finding some really good info on tap shifting here on Camaro5, but still would be nice.

#2 - the car will act as if it is in "D" until the tap shifters are used while it is shifted into "M". at that point, the computer will not allow you to make any improper gear shifts, such as, slamming it into 1st gear while rolling at 55mph... or, shifting into 6th while rolling at 15mph. #3 - AFM is indeed active in both "D" and "M". i have a Camaro that has suffered from a string of defects, one of which being a very noticeably jumpy and noisy shift between v4 mode and v8 mode when re-applying pressure to the accelerator after coasting. i can just as easily duplicate the AFM "symptoms" in "M" while using paddle shifters as i can in "D". but think of it this way... why are you engaging "M" and using the paddle shifters? because you want to drop it into 1st gear and make a quick take-off. when you're in "D", you automatically take-off in 2nd gear. and if you're punching it, or attempting to accelerate at all, you will be in "v8 mode" anyway. after all, this is the concept of AFM engines - 8 cylinders firing when power is needed; 4 cylinders firing when you're coasting or the engine is under very little strain while maintaining the current speed. |

I believe you are correct in the car taking off in second when in "D". One of my very first posts was about this but most said it was not true, if not my car is screwed up like yours.

APPARENTLY... switching into "M" without using the tap shifters does affect the auto-transmission shifting habits, keeping it geared lower and shifting stronger to increase performance - learn something new everyday with this car. and no, it wont automatically up-shift no matter how long you're bouncing off the limiter. i honestly thought i read it somewhere. seems like a good safety feature... good way to keep from screwing up your engine by trying to attain freeway speeds in 1st gear. |
