v6 power gains?
Hey people,
It sure has been a while since I have been on and its not because I haven't missed you. It's just my Camaro is more fun to drive than to read about, haha. Anyway, getting to the point: I need suggestions on what/how to GAIN POWER on my v6 auto 2LT(not that the trim level matters but I am glad to have it, haha)/ Performance mods... I don't want to buy a super charger just yet. I know GM has made me feel better by giving the v6 a 312hp rating due to their under rating before production. I really want to keep this thread a serious one so for all you good folks who have jokes like, 'get a v-8 or SS' or any smart comments you have just keep 'em to yourself and move on to troll around somewhere else I'm sure someone does give a rats ***.

The foundation of making more power is opening up the intake and exhaust system. That is where I suggest you start. After that, the sky is the limit!

well I will start with the message I saw on a sign in a "hotrod" shop many years ago, and it goes:
SPEED COST MONEY, HOW FAST DO YOU WANT TO GO!! But for starters, you would need to start with a good intake, headers an exhaust and a tune.......after that......for us 6'ers....if you want to do some serious upgrades......we wuill truely be waiting in a decent turbo or supercharger kit to come out that is proven and doesn't cost "your first born child".

Typical bolt-ons are not producing the extra HP a lot of us are used to... With intake, tune, shorty headers and axle-back I've only picked up 10 to 15 RWHP... Other cars that number might be closer to 25 to 30 RWHP...
Biggest gains are coming from long tube headers and high-flow cats.. but it is going to dramatically change the sound of your exhaust...

And cost you some extra $$$$$$ to gain a few more tenths. So you have to ask yourself, what are you looking to do, or gain. For most of us it was drop the weight, improve the looks, and get a nice sounding exhaust.

Anybody making shorty headers that are true bolt ons. For example no altering of the stock upcat. ? And who so far is making the shorties with the best gains?

Not a ton of data out there on all the shortys, but the best independant testing I've seen on shortys were the Doug Thorleys. There is a recent thread about them here, check it out.

problem is the stock manifolds are incredibly short and there is really no way to make any type of header that is going to bolt up to the stock down pipe... You are going to have to cut the stock downpipe...

Hehe, I don't see em making a 4 inch shorty. Would serve no purpose at all. Except to get a good laugh at it.

actually.. i saw someone had made an aftermarket shorty that is the same size and fits perfect. but i dont think your going to get much if any gains other than sound.
