Window Tint In Michigan

hey i live in michigan and i know the tint laws here say only a 4 inch strip on the fronts and anythign is allowed on the rear. However, i want to tint them anyways My question is for the people who have their windows tinted and live in michigan, have you ever been hassled my the cops about it? also, what % tint do you think i could get away with without being stopped? I wanted to go 20% around except for the windshield but is that too dark?

thanx

Question: Can I have tinted windows on my vehicle?
Answer: The law that covers window applications is MCL 257.709 . The use of tinting is limited to the rear side windows, the rear window if the vehicle has outside mirrors on both sides, and the top 4 inches of the front side windows. There is a limited exception for medical necessity with a doctor's prescription, which allows for tinting to be applied to the front side windows as well. Michigan does not have a specification for the darkness of the window application, but does prohibit applications with a solar reflectivity greater than 35%.

Question: If I have a signed letter by my doctor indicating a medical necessity for tinted windows can another person drive my vehicle if the windows are tinted?
Answer: MCL 257.709(3)(e) allows for front side window tinting with "...a letter signed by a physician or optometrist, indicating that the special window treatment or application is a medical necessity. However, the special window treatment or application shall not interfere with or obstruct the driver's clear vision of the highway or an intersecting highway." A vehicle equipped with such tinting could not legally be driven by a person other than the person to whom the letter was given.

Hope this helps.... I was in the army for 9 years and had mine tinted 20% all around in Ft Campbell, Ky and got a ticket by MSP home on leave.

Michigan laws prohibit tinting on the front doors and windshield. I have been tinting the windows (30%-35%) on my cars for years with no issues with the police, but that’s on SUVs and Minivans…not a red Camaro.

I tinted my Camaro; rear window: 28%, side windows: 40%, and windshield: 50%. See attached photos.

Bottom line, my wife got a ticket on the day after I got the tinting done.

You have to know my wife to appreciate this story. She is a lawyer, and the Director of the Ethics Office for a major corporation here in SE Michigan. She is as straight and honest as they come. I once had a pencil in my pocket that I took home from work and she said that I was stealing. I replied, "Its only a 5 cent pencil". She said, "But, it's still stealing". Get the picture?

So, she gets this ticket because I got the windows tinted...well, let just say if it wasn't illegal, she would have strangled me.

She got over it and I had the tint removed from the doors. By the way, it is a waivable offense; if you get the tint removed, the police will waive the ticket and there is no fine.

Alfie

I have a friend that just got a ticket last last week. It was a "repair and report" ticket. He had to remove his tints and take his car to the PD to get the ticket signed off.

Property tax revenues are WAY down in this state and police departments will be issuing lots of tickets to make up for that lost revenue. You can bet they will be looking for flashy cars with tints.

Yet another reason why I don't get mine tinted. I'm in Texas 10 mos of the year and tint is legal here, but those two months in Michigan aren't worth the risk to me, especially since my car is Michigan tagged.

35% on 5 windows. So far so good. Knock on wood. I will be driving with the windows down most of the time so the sides aren't to bad. I was told if they are all the same it can be less of an issue to notice the change in tint.

good luck

I've not had any issues with tint yet *knocks on wood*

20% all around may appear too dark on the sides. I limo'd out the rear three and went light on the sides. Because there is limited light coming thru the rear the sides look darker than they are.

but like RTCat said my windows are down when ever possible.

Nice Job CynAgain. That was my original plan. Limo the back three and go light on the side. The tinter talked me out of it saying if the back three are limo it raises the suspension level since they can't see in at all. Also, This creates the sides windows to appear darker which again takes the level of suspension up a little. That is why he recommended the 35% on all 5 windows and let it look natural. I have limo tint on my back three truck windows and it is HARD to see at night time. So I am glad I went with the 35 it makes it easier at night time to see out the back.

Interesting take on the subject. My tinter was the one who suggested doing limo in the back

Here's another angle and you can see right thru the sides. It all depends on the lighting.

As for night time driving, limo in the back doesn't bother me in the car, but I can definitely see it being an issue in the truck.

I wanted the limo on the qtr windows to eliminate the black out lines. Oh well close.

You are correct about the angles and lighting. Changes all the time.
