When did paint formulation change?

As I watch tiny chips appear in strange places (A-pillar, on door above rocker panel but below belt line), I am wondering when automotive paint was "changed" as I so often read about here. I had a 2007 Mustang GT that simply did not chip in 25000 miles. After 2200, I've attracted several on my SS. And yes, I've driven the same sets of roads, no paving zones, etc, etc. This is aggravating, and I hate the fact that I have trepidations about driving the car over this silliness. So, the $20 question, without starting a Chevy vs. Ford thing, is WHEN did paint go to hell? Any chance GM is going to do something (if they can) about this?

but wouldn't that mean other models should be affected beyond GM? I would imagine other manufacturers would also comply... that said, this is only california and is not enforced in anyway for other countries/states. It's not like it's a law that affects all of US or Canada.

I bought an '08 Wrangler new and the paint to this day, with 80,000+ km's on it, many of them highway, is holding up beautifully. Two chips on the grille, and two near the windshield. Other than that, no other chips, no scratches, and a beautiful metallic shine.

Reading the posts on here have made me very nervous about the Camaro so I'll just have to cross my fingers in hope. I clear bra'd the nose and side gills where the car sounds to be taking most of the beating. So far.. no chips.

Can you visibly see the clear bra on there?

I've read about the paint issues and have been researching different solutions out there to be a little proactive and avoid as best as possible this issue (in the market for a 2SS but haven't bought yet).

I've seen clearbra, venture shield, cleartastic and clear shield so far.

You can really only see the edges of the bra when you're upclose.
I don't wax the bra but I do use Meguiars Quick Detailer and the shine of the bra matches the waxed paint pretty good. Again.. you have to be close up to see the difference.. and you really have to be looking for it. A fear of differences in finish was the big reason that I didn't 3M the hood. That and seeing the edge. But just on the nose.. you don't even know it's there.

Very happy with it.

These cars are painted in Canada, different regulations.

That being said, my Aqua is not chipping at all. I have a few small chips but nothing that bad, none on the hood. My '05 Magnum was a different story, the inferno red was chipping all over the hood, very soft paint. And the Magnum was also painted in Canada, go figure.

One thing I have issues with is our windshield, that sucker chipping like crazy.

True the laws were started in Cali but do you see any manufacturer having two paint lines? The reason car makers are working towards even more stringent MPG standards for 2025 is because Cali wanted a tougher law then the 2016 one and car manufacturers didn't want to have multiple setups for emissions and MPG. So they are advancing it themselves. It's cheaper in the long run to just do it one way that encompasses everywhere. So all manufacturers switched as time went on. Perhaps the solution is more paint/thicker coat.

Believe it or not, a good wax job every couple months will alleviate some of this. Especially the stuff up high, where really small grains are contacting your car. Obviously, the bigger pebbles are still going to do what they do, but at least some of the real small stuff can be deterred.

Also alot of the paint issues are coming from switching to a water based paint. Most manufactures are now using the water based and IMHO does not hold up as well. It seems to be thiner and does not take abuse from regular driving wear as well.
