Found Mobil 1 5w-30 with GM6094M, but not GM4718M
I was just going to ask about this ! I went to look for oil today and found Mobil 1 5w-30 with GM6094M, but not GM4718M. Does the Mobil 1 have tobe the truck and SUV one. Someone post a link with a picture of the correct bottle? Does royal purple exceed all these specs? Because I'll just buy that. Also what's the best braand of oil filter? Mobil 1 has an oil filter, is that a good one ??

Royal purple I'm sure would tell you they meet all of those specifications, but I just wonder why they haven't made it on GM's list. They can sell it however they want, but something cheap like Pennzoil Platinum will hold up to a full oil change based on the olm, easily help your engine last to 300k miles, and not give up any horsepower compared to RP of any statistical significance. Mobil 1 oil filters are good. So are Wix (same as NAPA gold), Puralator pure one, and I've heard K&N makes a pretty good oil filter too. |

Royal Purple may meet or exceed the specs but it doesn't have the last of the three things it has to have, according to your owners manual, to not void the warranty and that is the API certified starburst.
If warranty isn't a concern, then use it. Honestly, just stick with Mobil 1 or any other synthetic on the list. Why take a gamble? |

If you do not see the GM4718M spec on the Mobil 1 bottle, make sure you are looking at fully synthetic, not regular oil or extended performance.
If the GM spec. is not listed, some bottles just say selected as original equipment by leading car manufacturers: Chevrolet Corvette, etc. That said, there are many oils that meet the GM spec., several of which, have exceeded the performance of Mobil 1. Valvoline Synpower and Castrol EDGE showed 8x better wear protection than Mobil 1 in the standard wear test. Valvoline also has a 300,000 mile guarantee against engine failure. I use WIX oil filters on all my cars. I had some problems with AC Delco filters leaking, I think due to weak baseplate design, so I switched to WIX and have not had any leaks. AC also just changed their base design again, and it looks like an even cheaper design. |

Be careful with those warranties. Have you read the fine print? With Valvoline's warranty, you HAVE to change the oil every 4,000 miles. Sorry, but my OLM goes longer than that and I am not going to spend money on synthetic just to change it at a measly 4,000 miles.
Those wear tests are just gimmicks. It's all about advertising. Edge doesn't look so good after a UOA. While Valvoline performs well by way of UOA's, it's in the 5,000 mile range. The TBN tends to dwindle quickly after that. If you don't follow your OLM and change it at 5,000 miles or less, then yeah, Valvoline Synpower works extremely well. If you plan on following the OLM (which typically goes well beyond 7,000 miles) I would use a more robust oil. Mobil 1 has stood the test for extended drains as well as Pennzoil Platinum. Pennzoil Platinum actually performs better than all of them and can easily go 10,000 miles. The new Pennzoil Ultra looks to be better on paper...some UOA's should start coming in soon and we will see for sure. I have the Pennzoil Ultra in the Camaro now and it runs as smooth as butter. It has a great additive pack and base oil and the beginning TBN is 13. It also is currently the ONLY oil that has the 2010 GF-5 cert. And it's only 1 of two oils that have passed the cert for Acura HTO-06 which is a very stringent test my friend. The other oil to pass it? Mobil 1. |

I just checked the Mobil 1 5W-30 Synthetic 5-qt jugs that I got from Walmart and they do list GM4718M.

This is Cool! I have found what I needed to know I have been looking over these Oil forums this morning and I found some blunt data if it doesn't have the starburst and its not on the approved list move along nothing to use here. I se that Havoline is on the list and I use that in the Truck so I am good to go with the Camaro when the time comes, thanks!
