May be easier, but certainly not cheaper unless you have some kind of deal for discounted or free oil changes at the dealership.

by the time you buy ramps oil and everything else and after you do a few oil changes it would be cheaper. besides the warrenty requires that you keep the oil changes and general maintance on board and doing it youself provides no record.

I use Mobil1, 6qts=$29.50 Napa gold filter=$7 Total oil change $36.50
For a synthetic oil change the dealer will probably charge around $60-$70 maybe more. I don't use ramps, just a jack and jack stands (which I already have) to get it high enough to crawl under. You can buy a decent jackstand for about $10 (you only need one) and a cheap hydrolic jack a Sears for $30-$40.

The warranty does not require you to have oil changes done at the dealership. You only need to keep your dated receipts for the oil and filter, should there be a warranty issue. I enjoy doing it and save about $30 per oil change and it only takes about 20 mins. Just offering an alternative for you to save a couple bucks.

Certainly easier but not cheaper or reliable (safer).

All it takes is one mistake by a teenage kid working minimum wage. :(

I used to be one of those teenage kids years ago at a local oil change place. We always tried our best to do the right thing but truthfully we were never totally trained properly and mistakes were definitely made on an almost dialy basis eg)double gaskets being left on, not tightening the drain plug enough, leaving the oil cap off, putting in the wrong oil etc. I'm just about due for my first oil change and you better believe that I'll be doing it myself now that I know, from experience, what goes on at some, but certainly not all, oil change facilities. It's not about the money, it's about the inner peace I will achieve knowing my baby is fed properly.

Great write up. The only thing I'm gonna change then next time I do it is to cover the whole drive way in newspaper! Man that oil shoots out far and then it goes nuts when the stream slows down.

Okay, hubby & I went to buy ramps but tried them out & the black strip under the nose of the car, scrapes & we backed the car off. That strip (don't know what it's called) bends but didn't know if it bends enough not to damage it. Someone said use planks on the ramps to lessen the angle (is that safe?). Or maybe use a floor jack & jack stands. But if using a floor jack, where should it be placed under the car? Hubby uses a an oil extracter for his Crossfire. Is that an option or bad idea? Guidance appreciated in advance.

put a floor jack under the frame or under the lower control arm. just make sure it doesnt move once you start lifting.

Great post!

Just a little trick that I use to keep from covering my arm in hot oil while taking out the oil drain plug...as you back out the plug, put constant pressure on the plug back towards oil plan until you feel the plug is all the way out and then pull the plug quickly.
