Chewy,

I would never knowingly break any of CA's emissions standards or this communist states laws regarding them, nor would I encourage anyone else to do so.

That being said:

There are several "Military Friendly" smog stations both inside and outside of the San Diego area. Like someone else mentioned, you are required to get a smog check in order to get base stickers. This is where the "friendly" shops will keep your hood closed or put on their special glasses that makes everything look all rosy. They realize that our mods are expensive and completely legal elsewhere and don't mind helping out us military folk.

Seeing the air crew pin as your avitar I'm assuming that your heading to Coronado? If so, you will need to be VERY selective as to how loud you allow your exhaust to get. They are VERY VERY strict when it comes to the enforcement of noise, speed and occasionally even tint laws. They keep the city alive with all the money they get from the tickets they get to write all the military guys coming in to work on a daily basis.

If you're stopped and sited, they will send you to a secondary inspection station, and they are not going to be as understanding as the shop that did you smog check. I'm sure you can imagine how expensive it would be to get CA compliant after you've already spent a ton of money on mods for your car, not to mention the hassle.

California allows you to keep your car registered in:

A) your home of record (this is what they consider for your "Residency" status) or your last duty station as long as your on active duty. If your from CA originally, get a DL from FL before you get out here.

B) California with a "reduced" rate. Last time I registered my car here it was just under $100, normal CA reg would have been just over $400.

You do not need to keep your house in FL to maintain your registration there.

When looking at registration, you have to have 2 of 3 (drivers license, registration, insurance policy) from the same state. If you keep your FL drivers license and registration, your good. You may get a note from the local PD if your car is parked streetside, requesting that you provide proof of military service to keep from getting cited for the extended use of out of state plates, but all you have to do is photo copy your military ID and send it to them.

I kept my VA plates for 4 years after I got back to CA. Reg was $35 a year and you could buy multiple years at one time in VA, compaired to the $75 per year for non-resident military (2002) and having to smog my car every 2 years in CA.

On a related note, if your married and your spouse or childern want to go to college here, they will need to be here 6 months to get the "residency" rates, but most schools offer a military family waiver that is good for 6 months. Normal residency requirements require you to be in CA for 2 years to get the resident rate.

If you are looking at staying in California forever, you may want to to the CA compliant route, but I promise, you will be in the minority.

Hope this helps.

Best post in this thread!

And Chewy, he is not kidding about the Coronado/IB police. There is a metric @$$ ton of old money in Corodado and they love to keep the noise down.

I was stationed there for over 8 years.. I never did have to get my truck smogged... but I got out in 02.... So that has obviously changed...

Military stickers on modded cars are an easy target...

Thanks again guys! If i do go back to CA in a few years it'll be to use my GI bill and most likely as a civilian again. So most the active duty advice i can't rely on :(

and I've been stationed in coronado before, thats where my first car was impounded for being parked in the wrong parking lot between 2-5am....

(and FWIW, my last post was shortly after i'd gone swimming in the arctic in my boxers. I'm still waiting for my 'boys' do come back out lol)
