I thought this too.

What octane is recommended for the Camaro SS?

Lol, we'll agree to kinda disagree and see what the car runs! I still think because the Camaro carries it power advantage throughout the curve, especially the torque, it should make up for the weight.

In short, the cars, IMHO, will be within a tenth or two of each other. Fall asleep at the line, miss a shift, spin too much, the other guy wins!

im looking forward to seeing what you guys come out with!
11:1 compression ratio on the Mustang would equal 93 octane recommended. The 4.6 had a much lower CR hence the 87 recommended.

Both the Camaro and Mustang will run on 87, just not going to get optimal power as timing is retarded.

The dealer says the 412hp rating is based on 91-octane but the car "Can run" on 87-octane safely but at less power. Makes sense due to the higher compression. How much less we will soon find out

By the pictures they appear to be the same size, is the IRS causing the majority of the weight diff?

Nice info. Based on info from other forums, going from 87 to 93 octane *should* net about 10 RWHP. That would put the GT around 370-375 RWHP, which seems to be about average for a new 5.0.

For drag racing, pay a lot more attention to the HP curve than the torque curve. You spend virtually no time at all under 4000 rpm (4500 for the 5.0), and thus the power down there is simply irrelevant. And so that I don't start a HP vs Torque war, I will remind all that HP = torque * rpm ( divided by 5252, if you wish to get technical).

That said, the LS3 does have a nicer HP curve, given that the 5.0 has its nuts cut off (so to speak) by a rev limiter that begins to kill it only 250 rpm above peak power.

That should be able to be fixed with a tune.

I didn't see this mentioned, but these dyno pulls were done with the ss in 4th and the gt in 5th, is that correct? Isn't that 1:1 for each car?

Yes they were. We were going to a 4th-gear pull in the Mustang for giggles but we will save that for when there is better gas in the car.
