If you are a Ford guy then the 5.0 is the best...

If you are a Chevy guy then the LSx is the best...

blah, blah, blah....same ol' story.

What everyone needs to realize is thank god the cars are so close. Chevy put the LS3 into a Camaro so Ford had to ditch the 4.6 and go to the 5.0. Now Chevy needs to respond.

The competition between the companies will make both cars better in the long run. For Christ's sake Ford kept that 4.6 for over a decade because Chevy flamed out in 2002. Mustang fans should be happy the Camaro came back cause if it didn't then you'd prolly see that damn 4.6 for another 4-5 years.

Also, since the Chally is so god damn humongous now they are gonna come out with an SRT10. So Dodge is gearing up with a response as well. I cant wait to see that monster on the road!!!

I think its absolutely awesome that all three companies are making the cars they are right now. Shit, I wish I could buy one of each. However, I can't. So, I liked the way the Camaro looked the best (plus I am a Chevy guy anyway) so thats what I bought. Plus, when I bought the car last April 2010 it was better than the Chally and the Mustang (in my opinion).

I like going to car cruises now and meeting my fellow modern muscle car drivers. And what I have noticed is that more or less (to me) its us verse the old cars and imports. I get more BS from those guys than anyone else. More or less the guys in new stangs challys and chargers like my car and likewise I like theirs. The guys in the old Camaros, GTO's, Chevelles, etc etc are now the ones who talk down about my car. Some of the comments are meant to be disparaging but they are not. The most common one I get is, "Yeah, any jerk can buy a new 12 second car. A real man builds his own....." I like asking them if they have a/c, power windows, IPOD, blue tooth and can they even take their prized possession on a road trip. Well I can drive across country in my car in complete comfort and still raise hell if I want. You can drive your 4.11 three speed big block from your house to the gas station and back a few times a month.

Now when I go to shows or cruises I'd rather park next to a new Mustang or Charger than a 69 Camaro.

And don't get me started with the Ricers. Other than the Grand Nationals (and GN) I dont wanna hear about how your car is faster than mine. Its not, period. Just cause you spent 20k on a turbo or $1200 on a 150 shot of nitrous your car may be faster today but lets be realistic that sucker is gonna blow up within 10,000 miles. Plus, I could add a turbo or supercharger too! Hmmm, 550+ hp at the wheels with a conservative and reliable set up. Just be quiet ricer and go park next to the other morons in their preludes and civics.

I drive a new Camaro but if I ever see a ricer against anything (old, new, german or italian car) I root for the ricer to blow. Thankfully they do that a lot.

does anyone know exactly WHY GM did such a strange thing? you would think to keep costs down they would just put one engine with a 6 sp manual and a 6 sp auto and be done with it...instead of having to mix/match parts and keep the extra inventory of 2 motors. seems backwards. i dont think a 26 flywheel hp rating would be enough to seriously hamper the performance of that 6sp auto.

They did it to avoid the gas guzzler tax on the A6

What? you do realize versions of this engine in 3.5 and 3.7 liter displacements have been used wince 07 which means they were working on it before there was a Camaro concept and even before a di 3.6 was offered. I takes years to develop an engine anyways.

Nope didnt realize that but the fact still remains that Chevy and ford will be competing like crazy to one-up one-another.

I drove a 2011 Mustang 5.0

First off I'm a car guy I like all car makes (well maybe not all) yet I'm partial to Chevy. Like you I've been reading all those stories and tests on the 2011 Mustang 5.0. I have to tell you don't believe everything you read. Almost all the 2011 5.0 Mustangs tested are "ringers". Their showroom version will not match the numbers in the majority of tests. Some magazine are partial to Ford hence you can't believe what they print, hint trending motors you get the picture.

What I mean by a ringer, those 5.0's have been optimized to go fast and in some cases some Ford magic was done to them, they have optimal gearing, most all 5.0's come with 3.31 gears unless optioned for a 3.55 and 3.73, most have been dyno'ed before tested, remember the variable cam timing is to produce good emissions and gas mileage, in stock form the the variable timing will hold performance back. There are other go fast goodies done to the 5.0. I really feel the Ford Mustang has taken such a beating by the 2010 Camaro Ford can't afford to show their true colors, everyone remembers the Ford built Cobra Mustangs a few years back where the engines when dyno'ed never met Ford's claimed hp and 412 hp from only 5 liters is pushing it.

Okay driving the 5.0 (keep in mind I own 2010 SS Camaro with a few bolt ons) the 2011 5.0 is a fun car, the 6-speed manual shifts much smoother then the SS, it is a much smaller car, the seat of the pants acceleration just doesn't have the grunt of the SS, disc brakes are much smaller hence stopping is poorer. I know the SS will beat the 5.0 in the 1/4 mi right off the showroom floor.

There is one area the 5.0 cannot match the 2010 Camaro and that is in engine compartment space, the engine bay of the 2011 Mustang is a "nightmare" it looks like an over stuffed suitcase. This will cause high engine bay temperatures not to mention no do it yourself modifications.

Wouldn't lower tire pressure give better 60' times but would decrease the trap speed?

Really opinionated review.....not much credibility on your part.

It is obvious you did not have an open mind. You have decided on the Camaro, which is a great car, but went into the test drive with a pre-determined conclusion.

Regarding ringers....I guess several of the independent owner review running 12.7s' and 12.5's with BONE stock Mustangs are just ringers too.

I would recommend researching a bit more before going to test preview a car and write a review.

With a hard-compound radial, the negative effect on trap speed would be minimal (if even measurable), and more than made up for by the positive effect of a better 60 ft.

Hmmmm, my GT500 has a overstuffed engine bay, low operating temps, and mods available up to 1000HP. Don't quit your day job.......

I completely disagree with the OP. My best friend just bought a 5.0 last week, the first one in our town, and let me tell you the 5.0 is flat nasty. It seems to have better acceleration off the line and smother shifting than my SS, but it's still to be determined how we fare in the 1/4 mile. In my opinion it could go either way with no more than a .1 difference. I'm a Chevy guy, but appreciate all muscle cars and I will be the first to admit Ford did a great job, as far as I can tell, with the 5.0. To be honest, I'm just glad that the auto makers are back in the business of muscle car wars.
