+1 I also would like to see this. Its all he said she said. I can post proof that octane has no effect on MPG's.

irocnroll, your posted "proof" is that using higher octane than the manufacturer recommends is not beneficial. It's irrelevant because we're talking about using exactly what the manufacturer does recommend.

Straight from the Owners Manual .
8-44 Driving and Operating Recommended Fuel : If the vehicle has the 6.2L V8 engine (VIN Code W) or the 6.2L V8 engine slight audible knocking noise.(VIN Code J), use premium unleaded gasoline with a posted octane rating of 91 or higher. For best performance, use premium unleaded gasoline with a posted octane rating of 93. You can also use regular unleaded gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher, but the vehicle’s acceleration could be slightly reduced, and you might notice a |

It does say it can run 87, but it recommends 93. I take that to mean "in a pinch fill it with 87, but be careful for knocking."

The only time you should be upgrading to a higher level is if your engine is knocking. If it isnt knocking at a lower Octane level then you are just tossing your money out the window paying for a higher Octane. The higher octane is not offering you any benefit. But if you get that warm fuzzy feeling shelling out the extra 15-20cents a gallon, go for it.

All in all I think 2SSRS makes a valid point. I think people who are willing to experiment should let the rest of us know what they experience running at lower octanes. It may not be hard proof, but I think it is the best we are going to get.
I do enjoy saving money, means I can upgrade my Camaro even more! I personally am too afraid to run 87 all the time. I budgeted the premium gas cost before I bought the car, so if I can't run 87 I'm not too worried about it. I anticipated the increased fuel cost, and I anticipate premium fuel going up a few more dollars. I think a lot of people did this when they decided to purchase the SS Camaro or one of the 6 bangers. |
