MT Owners - What's your passing gear?
You're driving along a 2-lane highway, when suddenly you come across someone on a Sunday drive - you see the broken yellow line, and it's clear as far as you can see.
What do you downshift to? |

Personally, my favorite is 4th gear, without a lot of warning - My SS, as the GF put it, will "bark" at the person I am about to pass, and 4th gives me enough power.
Hmm... Just thinking about it makes me want to go find a 2-lane highway... |

4th if thats the case. If I need to get around them quickly(or if they've done something to piss me off, lol), then its third.

3rd is "overkill" for most passes, and tends to cause the overtaken car to become irate and if they see you again they may try to obstruct you or pay you back somehow (like going 30 where there are curves and 70 where it's straight just to annoy you).

depends, if im coming up on them and the on-coming lane is clear, no need to downshift, just continue to cruise on past
now if ive been stuck behind this guy for a while now and i have to wait for a break in traffic to get around, hit 3rd. get it done and back into my own lane as soon as possible.

depends on the size of the passing zone, and the length of the vehicle to be passed.
I'd say 200 yds or less 3rd, more than that 4th |

Also depends on the speed of the road and the speed at which I come upon the "obstruction"... I know I've hit 70+ in second gear near 5500 RPMs, so if I need to get around him fast and I'm only doing 45, I'll drop into second. If I'm already doing highway speeds, third or fourth will get he job done

4th gear and punch it, they don't know what hit them.

Depends on the speed, on the hwy, at about 55-60 I'd drop it to third if it's clear for a few miles of visibility, otherwise if I'm cruising, I'll stay in 6th.

4th usually unless I'm needing to pass quickly, rev-match into 3rd and let her fly.....
