cam choices
ok months of saving up and researching and annoying workshops with questions here is my final cam kit choices for my LS3, manual.
Priorities ton of torque and choppy idle TSP 231/236 112 1st TR 231/247 113 2nd COMP LSL Lobe 219/235 113 but comp can spec it 112 for more chop. 3rd what would be your choice and why? |

I think your choice is between the first two camshafts. The 219/235 I don't think will get you where you want to be.
Both the TSP camshaft & TR camshaft will work pretty well. The TSP camshaft has a little less exhaust duration mainly for p/v clearance reasons. A lot more than 236-239 range & p/v starts getting close fast. As a result based off the dyno testing we did we felt sticking with the 236 exhaust lobe was a easy call, it made almost no difference in power compared to extra exhaust duration, yet it helped keep the exhaust valve away from the piston & happy.

I am doing a cam the first week in August and I am researching the heck out of them. Your Comp cam choice is what Comp Cams suggested I go with but I am not sold on it. On one hand I do not want any driveability issues but on the other hand I want all the performance I can get from a cam and have that choppy idle also.
The shop I am using is calling for a Comp Cam but they have not gotten the specs to me yet. My car is an LS3 also.

I have seen two cars with the tsp 231/236 cam in it (one of them being my own). both were heads and cam cars with full bolt ons (the other car even had a fast 102/102 on it). Both cars only put down 460 rwhp and 420 tq on different dyno jets.
That being said, my car put down 405 torque with just headers and exhaust. Add a cam, ported throttle body, ported intake, heads, a tune, I only gained 15 tq with the 231/236 cam. I will be swapping out cams this winter.

,tsp 231 is proven cam and has all the parts my cars a manual 3:9.1 gear ratio so should be sweet abd deliver a cammy sound that stock hasnt got.
Im running 4>1 1 3/4 headers twin 3'' exhaust and i feel the car only gets up and go once i hit about 2300 rpm its sluggish down low what the big cam eliminate that or is it the headers? |

what makes the 231/236 cam "proven"?
it has been through my experience that even WITH very well cnc ported/milled heads and very reputable tuners, that it is still only putting down cam only hp numbers and bolt on torque numbers. I can only imagine how low the cam only numbers are for the 231/236 cam. I have spoken with texas speed about this several times, and they have never got back to me with an answer, they just ignore me. If you look at the dyno chart that they list for their 231/236 cam, they cut off a portion of it... the portion that lists the correction factor. For all we know those were STD numbers on a day that was 33 degrees outside.

Our custom grind cam packages average 450-480rwhp with the factory cylinder heads and intake manifold. We offer our stage 1-3 cam shafts to give our customers the choice of how calm or radical they want there car to sound. Even our stage 3 cam shaft has great street manners with hardly any bucking at low rpms.

Too much duration and your car will run like shit with no power down low , remember the Camaro is heavy and torque is very important .
I went with a 225/230 TSP cam , full bolt ons , 4.10's and it's ok . I also asked TSP about their dyno graphs and didn't get a response that made sense . I did notice the larger cam only gained a few hp up high and lost some torque down low hence I chose their 225 . I'm happy with it . I'll eventually get back on the dyno .

has anyone had any experiences with this cam in there street car asa 226/236 .525/.525 110LSA CMP have this in carbed crate LS3 making 515hp looks like similar to hotcam.
110 lsa sure would be nasty idle but is it making good torque or is the tsp grinds better suited |

I've been researching like crazy on this as well....I've got an LS3 that has Kooks 1 7/8" headers & hi flow cats, along with a Roto-Fab CAI. I'm looking cam only, as I just simply don't have the $$$$ to start messing with the heads.
The first cam I was leaning towards ( 232/242 .601/.610 @ 114+2 ) would have been dangerously close on PTV. Bet ya it would have pulled some good numbers though, but imagine the carnage on a missed shift or over rev ![]() Comp Cams suggested this cam ( .571/.590 228/240 on a 113 LSA ) which is a scaled down version of choice A. Would love to hear the experts take on these choices.... |
