Yes, offset is the distance measured from the center line of the wheel width to the backside of the lug pad. However, I said the wheels would not fit the same. You are correct that both 9 and 10 inch wheels would be centered relative to eachother, but the outward appearance of the wheel relative to the fender edge will not be the same. The narrower wheel will tuck in more, given the same exact offset.

The aesthetic way to fit a wheel is to push the offset out so that the tire sidewall is about flush (or just inside) the max width of the fender opening. Assuming proper matching sized tires and wheels, of course. Then any additional wheel/tire width is added to the backside of the wheel, towards the inner fender.

So, we prefer to use the outer face of the wheel as the baseline reference, then measure back towards the center of the vehicle. This gets you maximum lip depth, and the best fitting tire track width.

Just depends on what you want, I suppose.

Nine Ball, I agree the 10 inch wheel will have deeper dish effect and have its outside edge closer to fender opening.

My point was that the position of the tire and the clearance around the tire would be the same for both wheels.

So you are making a point that the appearance factor is a big issue for most and it should not be over looked. Could not agree more...

I have 20x8.5 +35 and 20x10 +40.

What are the max tire sizes I can run on those?

Nine Ball,

In your opinion, what offset produces the best lip (farthest out before the tire hits the fender) for both 11 and 11.5 inch respectively (assuming a 315 tire)

Here are the recommendations:
295 tires: 9 to 11
305 tires: 9.5 to 11.5
315 tires: 10 to 12

I would recommend staying mid to wide side of the width range when buying wheels for the tire size you want to use.
Read it again.... i wasnt saying to put 305's on, i was saying i would never put anything bigger than a 305 on a stock rim. There are plenty of Camaro's on here and out there running a 305 on stock rims. Does that make it right? NO... but it is possible and you can run it at your own risk.
I dont know of anyone that's had any problem running a 305 on a stock rim (9inch).

Based on these recommendations (Camaro5), 305s require a wheel that's 1'' wider than stock.

Recommended 20" tires for 2010 Camaro
245/45-20 = 28.7" tall, 8.0-8.5 wheel
255/45-20 = 29.0" tall, 8.0-8.5 wheel
265/40-20 = 28.4" tall, 8.5-9.0 wheel
275/40-20 = 28.7" tall, 9.0-9.5 wheel
285/40-20 = 28.9" tall, 9.0-10.0 wheel
295/35-20 = 28.1" tall, 9.5-10.5 wheel
305/35-20 = 28.4" tall, 10.0-10.5 wheel
315/35-20 = 28.7" tall, 10.5-11.0 wheel

Thanks for posting the wheel heights. Makes me think I should run 265 front and 285 back just to get a little extra height in the rear wheel well.

The problem is there isn't much offered in a 285/40/20 size. If there is someone please let me know.

There's a pretty nice selection of 285/35/20 tires, but thats a smaller diameter than stock (28.1''). You'd need a similar diameter tire up front like a
255/40/20.

You'd have less height in the wheel well. But a smaller diameter tire will add gearing to the car.
