How does ABL equal Ambient Lighting?

I'm relatively new to the site, but I see the term ABL on here all the time. I have come to conclude that it is an abbreviation for ambient lighting, but how is that? Ambient lightning is two words, so logic would dictate that AL would make more sense than ABL.

Who came up with the term ABL to describe the option?

Thanks for making my point. Ambient is one word, choosing the B instead of the M, I, E, N or T seems completely arbitrary and makes no sense at all.

That's like calling the color Summit White by the abbreviation SMW, and nobody does that.

Aqua Blue Lighting
Ambient Blue Lighting
Amazing Blue Line
Etc.

Seriously, does it matter what it stands for? As long as people know you're talking about the lighting when you say ABL, the abbreviation as accomplished its goal.
- X

P.S. - personally, I'm all for Amazing Blue Line as the definition.

AL sounds like we'd be talking about some guy, a guy named AL. Plus, everyone loves using TLA's. They're much better than using AFLA.

As for who came up with it? Not sure. But its more important that as a group, it was decided that however illogical it may seem, ABL is the best short form for ambient lighting.

Probably chose the B because its start of the 2nd syllable you hear. Though AmL might have worked too.

You do raise good point about Summit White. More people should call it SMW, I'll do that from now on.

You could always justify it as Ambient Blue Lighting. That is unless it is the inferno orange interior. But we don't want to call that AOL

With some acronyms, the first letter of each syllable is used if its a vowel, along with the first letter of each word. So in this case, Am-bi-ent Light-ing. Technically it should be typed out AbL.
