Great. I can stop modding my SS. I'll just wait a couple years and get EXACTLY what I want with a factory warranty!

That is the common misconception that the Z28 was the least powerful.

Except for the six's...

1969 Camaro Z/28: 290 HP @ 5800 RPM
290 TQ @ 4200 RPM

More nimble for a road track? sure..most powerful? Nope.

Oh, you have for sure touched off a firestorm with that comment! The only regular production first gen. Camaro that was a real issue for the Z/28 (in a straight line race) back then was the 396/375HP version, if any curves were involved all the 396/375 saw was Z/28 tail lights. The other two 396 engines and the 350 295/300HP version were not a problem. So how do you draw your conclusion that the Z/28 "was the weakest of the 1st Gen Camaros"?? This topic has been discussed numerous times on this forum and many other Camaro forums, perhaps you need to go back and do some fact finding.

the 302 was under rated. More like just under 400hp.

Talk to wildpaws. He owned one. But it was by far not the weakest v8 in the first gen.

Personally I think you're trying to start trouble. Or just uneducated when it comes to camaro history.

The Z/28 was way under rated. The true horsepower was actually between 390 and 400HP. However, there was a high revving cam in the car and most of the power came in the upper band. A 396 big block Camaro would take a Z/28 in the first 1/8th of a mile because of the torque but the Z/28 would win in the 1/4 mile top end when the revs built up and the cam kicked in. The Z/28 was definitely NOT the weakest Camaro.

I certainly did (bought new in '69), and many other owners both past and present can attest to the performance on first gen. Z/28s. Where many people make their mistake in looking at the factory rated 290 HP is not paying attention to the RPMs of the factory rating. The 302 was capable of far more than the rating point of 5800 RPM and HP ratings of 400+ were quite common at 7k RPM and above (and first gen. Zs would easily turn 7k plus from the factory). Weakest V8s in the first gen. 327cid/210HP and 307cid/200HP that replaced the 327 in the latter part of the '69 model year.

In my opinion Chevy should be working on a bad ass SS for the 6th gen instead of wasting time on the 5th when they want to have a new model in a couple of years. The z28 in my opinion should be a suspension and handling package, (Track Pack + 373 gears) with an Ls3 and slight visual cues would make it what it needs to be.
The next generation of Camaros, which will include SS's, V6's, and Z28's, isn't due for another 5 years or so so its more than 'a couple' years away. Meanwhile, the 5th gen Z28 would be less than a year and a half away.

They need to make sure that there is no mistaking this with a regular one SS or it will be a major fail.
Why are so many caught up in how the Z28 looks. I wouldn't care if it looks like an LS. You buy a Z28 for performance not to have the fanciest looking Camaro on the road.

Essentially, the LS, LT, SS all look the same. BADASS!! So yeah, what is peoples problem with it's looks. Tweak the Z with some individual cues, stuff a big honking motor in it and go Mustang hunting. It doesn't get any better than that.
