I am speaking from my experience with the MTI short shifter and it is 100% better than stock. It gives shorter throws and feels so solid when making throws. I have tried out other shifters and they feel kinda clunky when shifting, the MTI is smooth and firm. I highly recommend giving the MTI shifter a shot as you will not be disappointed. I also got the white shifter ball with it and it fits in your hand perfectly. Just thought you might like some feedback on the MTI shifter compared to other shifters.

Here are some pics of the MTI. I also got the boot nut from MTI which keeps the boot down and allows you to adjust the height of the shifter to your liking. The Hurst shifter reminds me of the Rat Rods shifters that stick up in the air.

.
If you remove the chrome ring, and re-zip the boot over the Jamnut, it will look like this...

Exactly how do I remove the ring and just simply zip tie boot?

I will second the MTI comments. I had the MTI shifter installed in April and absolutely love it. IMO it's not even comparable to the stock version. I tend to slam the shifter from Second to third gear and with the stock shifter it would feel like it was about to break when i did it as well as it was not a crisp shift at all. the MTI shifter is much more solid feel as well as a short crisp move to change gears. This is an easy upgrade that I think all who try will apprecaite. I too have the white knob as well, and it puts a very retro cool look in the cock pit. I just got the boot nut yesterday and having it installed while the guys at MTI put the Borla Atak axle back system on my car.

MTI shifter is the way to go. Nearly a year on mine and along with their sway bars, the MTI shifter and bars are the best mods I have done to my car. Their products perform as advertised, if not better.

The Chrome piece is held on by a Zip-tie underneath the boot.

Here's what you do...lift the boot, and there is a zip-tie. Cut the Zip-tie, remove chrome ring.
Place boot into the groove of the MTI Jamnut, zip-tie the boot, and voila!

I'm an idiot.. I swapted out my MTI shifter for a hurst. I don't like it at all. The lateral movement just seems ridiculous to me. It also has a lot of vibration and causes the knob to rattle some times.
Looking back I loved the MTI and have no idea why I changed. And I've already sold it to someone. I'm going to the MGW. Anyone want a very new Hurst?

So why risk getting the MGW when it might not please you like the MTI did? Why not get the MTI again? Well, I guess if you don't like the MGW as well as the MTI, you can sell it later and get another MTI.

I like the look of the hurst but the feel was wrong for me. I went with the Barton. It feels nothing like the Hurst. Dave can't even keep them in stock he is always struggling to keep the orders filled.
