When I watched the "how the Camaro is made" show on TV, I thought these were a powdercoat paint baked on. That's what they showed, and the primer was the same way.
I didn't say they were new. I said maybe GM or there paint supplier will figure out how to make them more durable by then. Cars overseas have been using it longer than california.

Everyone keeps talking about GM "figuring out how to make the paint more durable" or talking about paint chips on their car as if it is a paint or process problem. The GM Oshawa plant has won award after award for being one of the best auto production plants in North America and the world (below is from Wikipedia). This is one of the reasons it was chosen as the birthplace of the Camaro.

"The plant won the J.D. Power Gold Award for initial quality in 2006, 2005, 2003, 2002; as well a numerous other individual awards for the specific models it produces. In 2007, the plant won silver for initial quality, and a Gold Best in Segment award for the Pontiac Grand Prix, and Bronze Best in Segment for the Monte Carlo. In all, the plant has won 19 J.D. Power awards for quality since 1999. In recognition of that achievement, J.D. Power awarded the Founder's Award to the Car Plant in the summer of 2008; it is an award that has been presented only six times in the lengthy history of J.D. Power & Associates. Harbour Consulting rated Oshawa #1 (building the Impala and Monte Carlo) as the second most efficient in North America, the top-rated in the study was Oshawa #2 (building the LaCrosse and Grand Prix)."

The paint used on the Camaro is the same paint used on just about every other GM vehicle and specifically ones produced out of the Oshawa complex.

I go back to my points made above regarding the design of the Camaro. It just exposes points on the car to road debris differently than any other car out there.

As I said, if you are driving this car on gravel roads or heavily cindered roads, take precautions to protect your car. The same would happen with any car in those conditions. Stop blaming paint or production as I feel they have nothing to do with the chipping that some people are seeing.

My Camaro paint does not seem any less durable than my other car. I leased a 2009 Toyota RAV4 6 months before I bought my Camaro. The RAV has chips and scratches. Heck a month after I leased the RAV an acorn feel from a small oak tree (IE the nut did not fall from a huge height) and dented the hood. That car seems to be made from super thin sheet metal.

The point is I don't believe GM's paint is worst than other brands but that the modern water based paint jobs on cars is much less durable than the older stuff.

As for quality I have owned Fords, Chevys, Hondas and Toyotas over the last 10 years. Had about equal amount of issues with each. I remember my Mother bought a new Honda Accord in 1988. A bird crapped on it the first week she got it and the poo ate clean through the paint. (Honda refused to repair.)

What can you do but keep a good coat of wax on it and enjoy driving it.

Chips on your spoiler? I don't know how that is even possible.

Find the show, and watch it. Then after you see it tell me what that is they are doing. I paint so I have a good idea of what I see.
I was going to tape it but did not do it.

It only comes out when the weather is good, and it has been waxed at least 10 times (Zaino & Mequiars). However, it has numerous chips (mostly on the hood and front), and the paint etches very easily. Two days ago I noticed some bird dropping on top that was on the car no than an hour. I immediately washed it off, but the paint was already etched. This has happened before, and the only way I could remove the mark was using compound/polish. I love my car, but I am very disappointed in the quality of the paint. I am also very disappointed in the waxes that I expected to protect against bird droppings and other contaminants.
I don't know what to tell you. I have numerous coats of Zaino. I have come out from work and had bird crap baked to the car. It comes right off with NO
sign of damage. I have no paint chips. Zero. My cars finish is better now than it has ever been.

I agree with the OP. I have a black 2SS and the paint etches by looking at it. I only have 1 chip where a large rock kicked up by a truck hit it - and that should have caused a chip. However, it does scratch very easily. Even a light layer of dust/pollen a few hours after a waxing will scratch it if you run your hand across the paint. I had my 99 formula sitting next to it yesterday, and they both had bird sh*t on them for about 5 hours (same bird probably). Anyway, I cleaned off the 99 with no etching, no scratching. Cleaned off the camaro, and the paint had already etched - and etched badly! That is unacceptable IMO. I'm wondering if the clear on these cars is extra thick? Maybe it's too thick to cure properly and will get better in time? Just a thought.

How's this for a GM paint job? I picked up my 2011 SS with 13 miles on it. It looks and feels like they painted right over a small pebble. I'm not even going to waste my time having them repair it. They will only scratch it somewhere else
