Is Nitrous safe?
I was looking at getting a bottle for a 100-150 shot on my Camaro, mods so far are 2" x 3" LT ARH's, intake, and exhaust.
I heard from a lot of people in my town that Nitrous is pretty much taking a sludge hammer to your motor, so I decided to ask the people who will know more then them, you guys. So pretty much the question is, is Nitrous safe?? |

just be sure to keep an eye on timing... my cars knock on stock timing..
too much timing + nitrous = invisible pistons...

If you don't know Everything about NOS then don't mess with it. I am not Against it, I run it in my car, but it is not for everyone. Supercharger is Dead Reliable and you never have to refill a bottle. Ted.

If you set it up the correct way it is very safe and reliable!!! The key is to set it up the right way. Make sure you have an up dated fuel system the will maintain at least 4 psi at wide open throttle with the NOS ingaged. Any thing less than 4 psi of fuel and you will run a "rich" NOS mixture and that is where you will get a piston melt down. I ran a 150 HP shot in my Z-28 on a 327 ci for 8 years and the only thing I had to do was after 5 years and over 30 bottles the valves started to reciede into the heads, not because of the NOS but because they were "old" camel hum heads that were not set up to run unleaded. While I had her apart I decided to freshen up the bearings and to my surprise they were as good as the day I put them in. I still changed the bearings but really did not need to and the "forged" pistons looked great! You don't need forged at NOS levels of 125 or less and some say that with the new pistons of todays standards you can run up to 150 HP shots. In fact, the only reason I pulled that motor was because I built and 468 Ci. rat that run the same numbers as the 327 only I didn't have to use NOS which is getting harder to find shops to fill and the cost for the NOS is getting up there too.
Just my 2 cents on it.

if it is done right it is the cheapest way to gain horsepower, do it wrong and it can be the most expensive. I had it on my 4th gen and it was awesome.

I would go the blower route, but a nitrous kit is around 600 bucks then however much the installation and tune would be. A blower is 8 grand and however much installation and the tune would cost. I can't afford that, at all.

You can’t go wrong with a 120hp Nitrous kit - it is definitely the poor mans way to make a quick hundy . Most off the shelf systems do not include the proper Gauge to check pressure so buy 1 of those. Then you will need a nitrous bottle heater. The bottle heater keeps the Nitrous at 900 to 1100 psi. I also recommend a good window switch. The window switch tells the nitrous when to turn on and off. Do not just rely on WOT - you need that too but the RPM window switch is a huge help Check out this video and how too http://www.gmsvideos.com/video/2722 http://www.gmsvideos.com/video/2689 http://www.gmsvideos.com/video/7598 |
