cant i buy the tires from a local mavis dicount or something and put them over the 20''ers on my 2LT rs?

That's what I'm thinking of doing. Although, I'll probably buy them at tirerack, and have a local place put them on my rims. I'm not interested in spending thousands of dollars to make a car I just bought drivable in the winter. I'm looking at the Parada Spec-X's. Lots of good reviews, good price and they fit on my OEM rims.

Yea you can do this and just use one set of rims.

Most people who have two sets of tires find it easier and cheaper in the long run to also keep two sets of rims.

Another reason to switch to a more narrow wheel and higher profile tire combination in the winter -

this is info from Tire Rack:
"A wide, low profile or large tire has to "plow" a wide path through snow which causes more resistance. The narrower the tire, the easier you can get through snow."

Also a narrower tire puts more pounds per square inch to the ground which creates a better bite to the snow and ice.
