Aye wait till after they are corroded before even worring about them. They would not have 300hp on a 6 banger with poor flow. I drove almost 200,000 miles on a 5.0 GM V8 that was 140 hp if you want to look at bad / poor restrictive emissions systems hehe.. so... just saying like above it's not the 70's...

Could be worse. Caddy's HT4100 V8...4.1L making 120hp of non-fury. Lots of torque, though, kinda like a diesel I guess. Trouble is, they didn't last long, the new computer-controlled systems were failure-prone, and the engine was prone to overheating and warping the heads or some such...

my corvette doesnt have a cat. I took it off and got a pipe and the guy that made the pipe said the cat was almost gone anyway. It still sounds a little deeper

Keep the CATS, just put a decent CAI in to change the sound. Keep the air clean for our kids for the sake of a POSSIBLE 5HP gain, keep your warranty going, save your money, avoid the fines, invest in another mod and avoid potential probloems building up in your engine.
Changing CATS in the 70's & 80's was a totally different kettle of fish to the gains you get now. I dont think it would be worth it at all.

One thing that bugs me on this forum is that we seem to have a lot of people who don't realize the progress automotive technology has made. They think things are still the way they were back in the 70s. Modern cats are not restrictive. They simply do a good job of cleaning up the exhaust, which is a really good thing for anyone who likes blue skies and breathing. Embrace modernity and keep them on. The car will sound and perform just fine, if not better, than without them.

The other factor here is price. When I was shopping headers for my GTO, the price difference between catted and catless midpipes was 150 dollars. The price for HFCs for the G35 was 400 and the test pipes were about 200. This all having been said, removing the cats is useless unless you get longtubes anyways. I prefer, and probably always will, American Racing. But this may all be a moot point regardless if GM doesn't survive the next year.

Might want to actually read my post. I never called anyone stupid. Car enthusiasts tend to overestimate the difference their mods make.

No no no, you got me all wrong. Trust me, I spent enough time under my and other GTOs to know that you can run catted mids off of LTs. All I meant was deleting the cats behind stock LSx manifolds is fairly stupid and pointless. Its not worth doing unless you're doing LTs, and even then, you might as well just stay street legal and get high-flows.
