I actually heard that number as well, but I can't remember where. I also heard that particular run was done in an auto.

if all your interested in doing is racing get the mustang. if you want a great looking car that will turn heads, goes more than fast enough, has great styling and handling. and would be proud to own and show off get the camaro. the mustang is plain looking but goes fast. the camaro gets attention wherever it goes from the track, to the supermarket people will be asking you about it and taking pics of it. it really depends on what you are looking for. attention on the track get the mustang like everyone else. attention everywhere else its an easy decision. either way enjoy your car

To the OP- the Mustang and the Camaro (and Challenger too) are great car's. What you need to do is go and drive both back to back and decide which one makes you smile the most. I have no problem with people buying American Muscle no matter what the tag on it says. Ford, Chevy, Dodge- it's all good to me. |

12.5?!? with 3.31? The fastest times from magazines is 12.7, and that is with the summer tires running 3.73. The 3.31 will have a slower 1/4 mile time, not faster. I have seen reports of a stock mustang going 12.3s with slicks.

Get the Mustang by default if you are unsure. It is the least risky decision for you. The company is in better shape, they get better gas mileage, and I think they figured out how to paint a car uniformly. For these same reasons, avoid the Challenger too.
But there should be more to your decision-making process than practicality. History plays an purely emotional, but important part. For example, I was sold on GM when I saw my first red 1973 Firebird 455-SD. I was disgusted with Ford when I saw the super ugly Mustang II hatchback. I was pre-disposed to consider the Camaro over the Mustang and it will take a lot to change that. Emotion should play part in the muscle car buying process. These care are not practical. Good luck with your decision.

I've owned several Mustangs in the past, and recently sold a heavily modified Lightning to buy my next car. Most of the people I hang out with and the car clubs I'm involved own with own Fords and were surprised when I chose the Camaro. "The new Mustang is lighter, faster" etc etc. The '05-'10 Mustang was completely out of the question with it's anemic 300hp engine. The '11 with the 5.0 made me consider it at least, but in the end I'm just not a fan of the new Mustang. I've never particularly cared for it's styling. The GT500 is nicer, but I wasn't willing to pay the money for one. I just prefer the Camaro. I like the way it looks, I like the way it drives, it's very comfortable, and the performance is on par with a Mustang. It might be a little slower stock but mine stayed stock for about 2 seconds anyways. After I got it and everyone saw it and got to really check it out, even the most die hard Ford guys agreed "hey that's a pretty cool car."

At the time I bought the Camaro, the 5.0 wasn't out. So when comparing the Camaro to the Mustang, it was a no-brainer. The Challenger was actually a harder decision, but it's price ended up being the deciding factor for me.
Having said that, if I were buying today I'd probably still go with the SS. It's roomier, rides smoother and performs about the same as the 5.0. Sitting inside the Mustang felt like being inside a compact car. I'm also not sure if, 5 years down the road, I'd regret having had a daily driver with a SRA, potentially optional gears, and a louder exhaust. That stuff all sounds cool when you're looking for something that scoots, but I can easily see it becoming a drag when the shine wears off. |
