When I was in the Air Force, I bought my first new car in 1989. A Pontiac Sunbird.
My buddies were touting the virtues of Mobil 1, so I called Dad. He was a jet engine mechanic in the Air Force for over 23 years. He helped introduce the F-111, F-15, F-16, and the F-117 to the Air Forces' arsenol. Anyway, I asked him about Mobil 1 back then. He told me the next time I was patrolling on the flight line, stop by the engine shop and check out the barrels of oil. I did and the barrels were stenciled "Mobil Synthetic". I told Dad what I had found out. He then told me that the Air Force has used Mobil Synthetic Oils in their jet engines for as long as he could remember. Also that if that oil could stand up to everything thrown at it by the Air Forces' planes, it could withstand anything my little, bitty Sunbird could dish out. Since that day 21+ years ago, I've used nothing but Mobil 1 in all my vehicles. Even my "beater" work cars. Do I recommend it? Does a bear... well, we all know what a bear does in the woods. Mobil 1, often imitated, NEVER duplicated. |

I have used Mobile 1 for a long time in other cars. Just bought a 2010 Camaro LS. I'm not sure what they put in it from the dealer/factory. Guess I can ask them, but do you know if it would be a synthetic or non?
Thanks.

How much stock do you put in the "remaining oil life" figure?

Most people indicate that the remaining oil life % is fairly accurate. people still do the every 3 or 5K miles, but the computer does a good job of calculating the remaining life. I "was" one of those every 3 or 5K oil changers, but with the SS, I am now going to start changing around 20% oil life left. Old habits are hard to break

Thanks for the welcome! In my high school days, I was a die-hard Mustang fan. I drove a 69 fastback with 302 V8. I have owned a 77 Corvette, but sold it before my son got old enough to drive. (Wouldn't have been able to afford the insurance on all of our vehicles!). But now...I love my Camaro! It is a joy to drive.

This info is false....maybe the poster just mis-typed????
All the V8's take 8 qts. L99, LS3 (SS) All the V6's take 6 qts. LLT (LS, LT)

when in doubt... add oil, and check dipstick. 67 Con gives you a good ballpark figure to aim for. i would recommend not listening to any number that anyone says. don't blindly add oil... always check the dispstick. if you need more, the dipstick will tell you. add a good amount, run the engine, let it rest, check the dipstick. |
