I have a JBA catback on mine and you can hear it when it changes but it is not bad. I don't even really notice it anymore.

Tom P - If time allows meeting and a cruise sounds good, have family in Greenwood. PQ - yes AFM does kick back in quickly, its that 1/2 to 1 second pause thats really annoying and troublesome to compensate for when your already ahead of the response time. and to say again that backfire was really upseting, hard to descibe but,a long hesitation from pressing lightly on throtle and then BANG. pissed me off, AFM is gone!

Reasons a tune is a must in my book.

1. AFM - extremely annoying (makes a V8 sound like a VW Rabbit at certain rpms).
2. Transmission Tune - (makes the car drive and feel completely different).
3. More power and torque (especially at lower rpms because of reduction in torque management).

I have the AFM turned off so my post is kinda skewed but.......

I have this setup and its absolutely perfect

2 Magnaflow 10416 Mufflers (Welded into a COMP AXLEBACK)
1 Magnaflow 14386 Resonated X-Muffler (Welded into a 2.5" midpipe)

The car sounds deep with no drone
Driving around town it sounds perfect
Loud when your on it but not to the point its too loud

I am still debating on headers w/cats OR just going JBA cat pipes
I had a set of JBA cat pipes but a friend is taking them for his car

I just cant make up my mind if I wanna run headers on this car
Honestly I am leaning toward them

If it's just cat-back you should be fine. The noise/vibration comes into play when you install headers and remove the manifolds along with the vibration dampners. The switch from 4-8 cyl mode causes the motor to shake/vibrate and w/out the dampners that vibration is transferred to the vehicle.

I put in LT headers and a catback exhaust. AFM is TUNED OUT! My fuel economy improved after the tune and HP is WAY better. Do it!

I put in Borla's quietest exhaust. With the LT headers, it still has lots of growl under throttle and when idling. But, the cabin is quiet when cruising.

Mine isn't as bad as some of you have described. The 3" exhaust has a real deep sound and when the AFM kicks in you have to turn up the radio to drown it out. Plus there is a small pipe that runs along side the frame on the passenger side that looks like it comes from the transmission, and even after adjusting (tapping with a rubber mallet) still hits the exhaust when jarred real hard. The exhaust also runs hotter than the stock! I was thinking of putting the stock back on and just changing the rear section to an axle back to keep the look, and also get a better sound. Would the stock pipes with an axle back be any quieter when the AFM kicks in?

Well, I have read everybody's comments and I will say that my car was completely stock and AFM was hardly noticeable. Then I did a muffler delete and the exhaust was loud but so was the AFM and it did not sound good. I have now put the Borla ATAK axle-back and the AFM is much more manageable but the exhaust is not as loud as I would like. I am thinking of adding an x-pipe and removing the resonator but I am pretty sure the AFM will be annoying again.

I should also add that my AFM is tuned out. After a couple thousand miles I can say I lost exactly .7 mpg. I also tuned it out the same time I added a CAI intake, so maybe that contributed to the lower mpg as well. All in all .7 mpg is not nearly enough to justify keeping the AFM. The car is much more enjoyable w/out it.

shaner, could you confirm that tuning out AFM voids warranty? I've heard/read a few conflicting opinions.

BTW, I'm finding this to be a very beneficial and informative thread for us A6 folks.

I'd say les than .1 second. AFTER activation by the pedal. It's absolutely unoticeable.

Not possible. You can't be growling at all times.

I wonder if the drone I'm getting is AFM???
