the old school Camaros with performance exhaust had drone up the ass... so much so that anyone complaining about drone in our 5th gens are just overly sensitive.

people complain about the highway cruising long distances in 6th gear drone. it's not so loud that you can't hear your music, or that you can even hear it at all when you're listening to music.

and the drone is definitely not loud enough (depending on how much exhaust work you've done) to drown out the wind noise at 70mph.

drone = non-issue

but it is kinda funny that no one with headers, hi flow cats, and cat-back exhaust hasn't posted any "drone" sound videos.

me? if i didn't want to hear my exhaust, i would have left it stock.

So let me get this straight, go out and buy a "modern" muscle car, modifiy it with exhaust, cold air intakes, short throw shifters, tunes, etc. and then whine about a little noise This ain't a video game, drive these things by the seat of your pants and enjoy it, if it drones punch it and hold on, drone goes away.

Drone's like sex. If you've never experienced it, it wouldn't do a damn bit of good to try to explain it to you.

http://www.faberacoustical.com/produ...e/signalscope/

This will measure your exhaust sound and show you an acoustic peak, which is the drone between 1700-2000 rpm in 6th.

Drone (also known as resonance) is the byproduct of sound energy generated by your engine exhaust interacting with the body structure of the car. The engine and flow noises are amplified by the trunk and cabin cavities. This results in a low frequency, dull, thrumming sound that can be very annoying. Certain low frequency sounds can even make people sick and nauseous. This is the drone or resonance people refer to when talking about most aftermarket exhaust systems. You will typically not notice this drone when at idle or accelerating hard- it becomes very apparent at highway cruising speeds (actual speed and level of drone depend on vehicle and engine combo).

Most aftermarket exhaust, due to their design, are unable to cancel the low frequency noise. We at Corsa Performance have made the elimination of low frequency resonance our primary goal. We are the only aftermarket exhaust manufacturer that gives you the performance benefits of a free-flowing exhaust without the annoying part-throttle resonance

Again...here is Drone....seems to be the best explanation out there.

I used to like it when I was a young buck driving around in my 69.The drone in the New Camaro is just not the same.

Alot of it has to do with the trunk design and exhaust exit location.

Before I got my Corsa the rear view mirror would vibrate.

It sucks for sure,Corsa's the cure..

Drone is the unpleasant tone that often rears it's ugly head on GM LS-series engines when aftermarket exhausts are installed. It's not musclecar sound, it is more similar to the scratching-your-fingernails-on-the-chaulkboard kind of issue, everyone has different tolerances for it, and some cars do it more than others.

Usually it's at a higher gear (5th or 6th) at highway speeds where the engine is running 1700-2000 rpm and has a sustained load. That's what the G8 had, and from what I've read on several threads here, it's similar for both v6 camaros with aftermarket exhaust, and some v8 camaros with hf cats and/or headers and aftermarket exhaust.

Most 'youtube' videos do not pick up drone, since not only it's subjective, but it's more of a vibration and most consumer grade (and even some prosumer) video cameras do not have a sensitive enough mic to pick up what the human ears do.

I also have compared it to two people singing the exact same note for a sustained volume, right near your ear. Now one of those people changes either a sharp or a flat off from that sustained note. The resulting combination sound is offset to the point that it doesn't sound right, and once again, if you were subjected to that for an hour, you'd surely punch one of those singing guys. That's the concept behind drone, but as others have said, it's directly related to the engine harmonics and how they interact with other parts of the car.

It's the kind of thing that would give you a headache if you had to take an hour trip with cruise control set and the car going that constant 'drone speed' for the entire hour.

My G8 has an aftermarket exhaust system on it, and it's drone free. I am pleased.

People who don't get it, haven't heard it. It is simply the sound wave doubling back on itself, thus amplifying the frequency. Take a sound source (single tone is best) set the volume at normal comfortable level, then point it at a concrete wall and move closer or farther away from that wall until suddenly, the volume increases two fold. That is the resonant frequency.

if drone was like sex, there would be a lot less people complaining about it

I listen to my music moderately loud...not thumping down the street rice box loud, but enough to get the point across to my a-hole neighbors.
If you are ever in the Sarasota -Venice area you can always try out my car. I have the Borla S type cat back on an LS3

Hearing LOUD exhaust in not the same a hearing DRONE.

Maybe you haven't experienced it.....It has nothing to do with age.

I personally like a nice aggressive exhaust note, but also like to carry on an itelligent conversation while cruising.

Who's talking when your on the go pedal anyway?

Hard to do if all you hear is the car.....but then again some people like to
hear only that,the Car.

By the way, when your in CAPS lock your yelling at everyone

i don't think i have ever had a conversation while driving. usually the conversation lasts for a few minutes, then the music gets turned up. i like to hear my exhaust. if i hit the highway, i'm definitely not going to be running my mouth the whole time. sit back, turn up the tunes, and enjoy the ride and the scenery.
