If only that were true! Border patrol came onto campus after one, and the Principal got in the way and demanded they leave since the school was a sanctuary. Believe it or not..THEY LEFT! In AZ, the schools are pretty much a joke. The people of AZ want common sense, but the administrators are former flower children. That is why I retired from teaching. You are not a teacher if they won't let you teach.

On a serious note...

This is one that has NO easy answer. I taught adult ed for many years and had a few students that were challenges but nothing like this. I have also been a paramedic for nearly 3 decades and dealt with all kinds of bottom feeders.

When I was in high school (early 70s)there were a couple of young men who harrassed me. When I stood up to them they ended up jumping me and hurting me so bad I was out of school for 3 months! I take ANY THREAT seriously. It is nothing less than "social terrorism".

If the kid has a chemical dependance or a metabolic imbalance there is still no excuse for him acting like this in a PUBLIC school let alone anywhere else. Take all threats seriously. Zero tolerance for workplace violence and that IS your workplace as well as the other students in your class who are trying to learn.

The old addage "peace through superior firepower" rings true with a BULLY like this. He apparently has just never been stood up to by authority or he really is suicidal, friendless and loner and doesn't care anymore.

He needs to have a serious attitude adjustment by another party to get his attention. He will then become compliant or else. Have you ever seen the old TV documentary called "Scared Straight"? That was a very powerful method of educating youth real quick on the dangers of becoming incarcerated for illegal activity and having anti-social behavior.

I agree with the others about all the safety measures i.e. camera, parking, witnesses, documentation. NEVER put yourself in the position of being alone with this guy EVER! You are an attractive woman and that may be a contributing factor with his "teen brain" and racing hormones, in thinking he can challenge you in that regard.

As for MACE... "WASP" spray is reported to have a great deterrent affect! (Read SNOPES comment). Good luck Teacher!

PS-Perhaps you should sponsor a GEN 5 CAMARO DAY at your school and have a rally in the parking lot. Invite about 200 of your closest Camaro5.com members to attend and then let the kid know he has to deal with the Chevy Armada if he acts up!

Doesn't really sound like he's trying to be the class clown. None that I knew in school went as far as threaten a teacher. And you didn't have another teacher with you when you talked to this kid in the hall? All of my teachers used the buddy system when I was in school, though mostly because of not wanting to be alone with a teenage girl.

Maybe you should not have aired your laundry here.

If I am guilty of neglecting this student’s education, then I would be the first one to say that I should be taken to task. However, I don't believe that I have. I have offered many opportunities for improvement, from after school tutoring, extra assignments, make-up/re-do assignment/assessments. And I continue to offer them. As I mentioned in the original post, I know that this student is smart and fully capable of being successful in my class and more importantly outside of my class and in the world. However, he currently seems to be more interested in being the class clown then pushing himself to reach his full potential.

As I previously stated, it is my hope that after his visit to the Dean’s office, his behavior will change and I won’t have to go any further up the steps of the discipline model, and my car can stay safe. I believe that both can happen, if someone can get through to him. I obviously cannot. I have tried. Now I am hanging my hopes on the next step, the Dean’s. They deal with discipline issues on a daily basis, and I’m sure their ‘toolbox’ of skills to help these students is larger than mine.

One of the most important life lessons that I have learned is that I am not an expert at everything. There is no shame in asking for help. That is what I am doing. I was originally going to ask the Deans for help for class clown behavior issues, but now have added dealing with inappropriate threats to the list.

And to those that suggest violence is the answer, it's not. Yes, I agreed with the poster that said people should carry mace for protection, but that is much different then aggressively seeking revenge.

O.K. I have now stepped off my soapbox.

(Yes there was another teacher in the hall--and his original behavior issue was 'class clown' behavior, but it was after I was trying to confront that issue, that it was moved up to a more serious issue. If I didn't have a car that stood out so much, I do not know what he would have done. Would he have threatened me differently? Would he not have been able to come up with a threat so fast? Would he have just listened? I don't know, no one does. This doesn't mean that I will stop driving my car--then he will think he won. But I do believe that if someone else can get through to him it is in everyone's best interest, his, mine, Bumblebees, and society)

My wife drives the Camaro like once a week (if that) and She works w/HS kids every day. Drive a backup beater car thats better w/gas milage, less worries, less wear and tear on your camaro. Thats my suggestion.

I heard a lot about that kind of children's behavior in your country from friends who are teaching there now. That really sucks!!!! Some kids would just grab their laptops so they just don't used laptops anywhere inside the school.

The best thing to do is to make an incident report. To threaten someone or her possession is against the law. This would lessen your burden.

Take it easy and relax...

Wish that was true, but there were no other kids around when I was talking to him. I had another teacher watch my class while I dealt with him. If he just wanted to be cool in front of his friends, he could have just told them he threatened me without ever actually doing it. They wouldn't have known if he was telling the truth or not. Besides, I really don't think he has any friends in the class. Which is sad, and possibly part of the problem.
Oh sorry. That can be a problem. Just keep your guard up or have him transferred to a different class

Didn't have time to read thru the entire thread........

A couple of things come to mind immediately:

>police report. This fellow is unstable - and you need to document that there has been a threat made against your property. (and that may include you...)

>My sense is that this person has Attention Deficit Disorder of some level or sort.........has there been any diagnosis?

Meanwhile - I'll say a prayer that you (and your Camaro!) are protected.

The prophet has spoken. ADD makes you not concentrate well. I kinda am. ADHD is hyperactive disorder and may lead some people to do stupid stuff

As a teacher myself I can fully relate to what you are going through. As far as I can tell You have done everything that you need to do and are required to do. As far as getting any help from the teachers Union, as one person suggested, they are worthless for thin gs like this. The best thins to do are to document things (which has been done) and to make sure that the school administration is fully aware of what this student has said to you. I would also speak with the schools Resource Officer. My Camaro is not my daily driver, except I do like to drive it to work at least sometimes and I make sure I get to school early so that I can get a good parking spot and I make sure to check her after work to make sure she is OK. Also at my school students are not allowed in the teachers parking lot for any reason.

well it'll be that kid's ass, and his parent's wallet that gets the worst of it if he does anything to your car.
