What have you broken, how did it happen, how much power do you have?

In my seemingly never-ending quest to decide which route to go with forced induction one of the things that continues to pop up is "how much can the stock bottom end and driveline handle?" What appears to be the general feeling is around 550RWHP is when one should start looking beyond the stock platform and start addressing other things.

I'd be interested to know who has actually broken something out there in the engine or the driveline be it on a stock car or a modified one so the questions are?

1) What have you broken?
2) What mods do you have?
3)If you have forced induction what kind and how much boost are you running?
4)How much RWHP and RWTQ do you have?
5)What were you doing when something broke, i.e. side stepping the clutch at the strip or just out driving miss daisy?

I know a lot of the equation is how you drive your car as opposed to an absolute number because we know it is possible to break things with just the stock power output but I was hoping if all the incidents could be noted in one thread a pattern may start to show up as to when, why, and how things are breaking. Whether something is a fluke or there is a pattern building.

Thanks in advance....

The stock internals and driveline are actually stronger than most think.I myself have not broke anything. I know I'm going to get into an argument here because some people can't get it through their thick heads that these cars were built with the knowledge that people were going to beat the piss out of them. 600hp seems to be a safe zone for these cars..anything more and your taking a chance. Anything over 8lbs and your going to have to start changing injectors, building a new bottom end, adding long tubes and a boost a pump. I have heard of people running up to 8lbs of forced induction without any problems.

The body structure is very solid as well and you won't need any bracing unless you plan on having your car see the track more than the street.

Unless you plan on dropping the clutch from redline..and only a person who didn't know what they are doing would...you won't have much of a problem as long as you stay under the 600 horsepower mark. I have heard of people dropping the clutch at 3-4000 RPM's and have had no problems...I can attest to this as I've done it myself many times without a problem.

Superchargers cause less damage than one would think. If you ever had the chance to work for a top fuel team...and I have..you would realize that the one part that is used multiple times is the supercharger.

Loss of oil pressure and mainly heat are what causes most damage to an engine. If you ever had the chace to look at the internals of a dragster you will notice a long tubular metal can with a pressure gague on it. The main purpose of this can or pressure feeder is to force oil at a high pressure to keep oil going to the front of the motor. Without this can..oil will not flow to the front of the motor under the force of speed. It's usually the rings that are the first to go in a top fuel motor. A top fuel block is usually only good for about 2 passes as they clean up the motor and resize the rings inspect all other parts and replace what looks like it can cause a problem during the next pass.

Of course there are the teams that completely rebuild the block with new parts..but most teams save money where they can and reuse parts that have been cleaned and inspected. Parts are however not reused the same day and like a conveyor belt are rotated.

I know I'm going off on a tangent here but, my main point is...it's pretty hard to screw things up with this car. I know some would argue with me...and I bet it's bound to happen..as it's happened before. It's funny how some people who have had this car for a few months are so misinformed they are willing to sit there and argue with people who have degrees in mechanical engineering, spent many years in a machine shops, built and rebuilt engines, been to perfomance oriented colleges for cars, have built and designed the parts for these cars themselves, those that have spent years on racing teams..people with knowledge banging their heads trying to teach those who want to learn. I have heard some really stupid and misinformed comments here...and quite frankly...this probably will be my last post here. I'm tired of correcting the misinformed..then arguing with someones ego because they can't admit they were wrong. I apologize to the OP for jacking this thread..but I feel what was said had to be. Ban me if you would like...I don't really plan on coming back here much more anymore anyway. Rant Over!!!

PM sometime. Have some rough guidelines that may help.

Red face What broke so far...

The OEM clutch was swapped out early on to accommodate some additional hp from a professional tune, long tubes, Borla exhaust no cats, cai and drs. Nevertheless, the new Fidanza blew out at Irwindale Dragway. Next the engine was cammed, new ported heads, valve springs and Kenne Bell charged. This time I broke the output shaft bearing and shitted the transmission.

I suppose the next weakest links to go will be the axles, drive shaft and the differential...

Ya' gotta' love goin' fast more than your wallet, eh?
