A few questions about cams, headers and exhaust.

I picked my new 2010 Camaro up on may 19th and have some minor stuff done to it. I recently just started looking up camshafts for it and I have a few questions to ask. Ill give you as much detail as I can about what I'm looking for from the car.

First off, here are my goals for the car:

-450HP at the wheels
-Not super loud, due to the fact I hate the constant exhaust sound on 4 hour trips
-Still want the car to be a "daily driver" or "streetable"
-Has to have a cam, I love the sound of a nice cam'd car.

So with that being said the current mods I have done to the car are:

-Hypertech programmer ( will be a custom tune with the cam )
-K&n CAI
-Magnaflow axle back kit

Now for the questions I have:

1-I'm looking at Kooks long tube headers (1 7/8 dia.) Can I use these with the stock cats and my Magnaflow axle back kit? If so opinions on how much louder it will be? It's perfect where its at now soundwise and has a nice rumble to it but I don't want it any louder.

2-This is the cam I'm looking at (Comp Cams XR281HR13 .571/.590 228/240 on a 113 LSA). Thoughts and opinions on if this will be too aggressive of a cam for street use? How would the low speed driveability be under 2000 rpm?

3-If I do put a cam in the car will I need to replace valve springs, pushrods, retainers, locks, rocker arms, roller lifters? I want the car to be reliable and have the job done the correct way but if the stock stuff is strong enough for the cam listed above then theres no sense in throwing money away.

4-Are there any reputible sites that offer complete kits for the stuff listed above? Including timing cover seals and everything to do the job?

Thats the big questions I have for now, I will be installing the cam myself I'm 22 years old and work as a Subaru Technician and have all of the tools to do the job. I have to say the Boxer style engines are a totally different world then this GM stuff so its going to be alot of studying before I rip into my new LS3 but I'm confident I can do it with ease. Seems alot easier then the Subaru motors thats for sure

So thanks in advance for answering my questions I appreciate the insight as GM motors are pretty new to me.

if you don't want too loud of exhaust, lots of people are running headers and x-pipe with cat and resonator delete and keeping the stock mufflers. sounds very good. as far as the cam goes talk to texas speed, they have a cam package that has the springs and pushrods in it.

With the Magnaflow axle back system it's a muffler delete, you have to cut the mufflers off so that really Isn't an option with the stock mufflers lol. I'll keep Texas Speed in mind though, thanks for the post.

I hate super loud exhaust, I heard a 2010 ss that had long tubes and 3 inch all the way back with no cats or mufflers and it was extremely loud. To the point where it was so loud it didn't even sound good. That's what I don't want lol.

Thanks WhyteMamba for the info

I have this exact setup and agree its too loud. Contemplating what mufflers to put back on it with the x pipe addition. didn't keep my stock mufflers....so i'm screwed there...plus i hate the looks of those trash cans under the back bumper..

Stay away from LT's if your not wanting to make your car loud as hell. I put 1 3/4" LT's on and now it sounds mean as hell, but like something that should be running around in circles on Sunday at 200 mph. It is nowhere near subtle. Interior noise level is over twice what it was with just the JBA axle back.

Swap out the cam, port/polish your intake, slap on some BBK "Tuned Length" headers, grab a different CAI and welcome yourself to the 450-475rwhp club.

which magnaflow axleback do you have? if you have the competition axleback, which is a muffler delete, its gonna be loud with headers. from what i have read, with headers you need to go with the magnaflow street if you dont want it loud. not sure about the drivability on those cam specs. yea just call some of these performance shops on here for advice on that. there are a lot of great vendors on here. for cam install advice, i would call say jannetty, adm performance, vector motorsports, vengeance racing, late model racecraft, east texas muscle cars and of course texas speed. all great shops on here. remember though, these guys stay busy. brandon at maryland speed can answer all your exhaust question on the sound you want. good luck.

Matter of taste on longtubes. From the get-go I didn't want really loud, just muscle. I bought some LTs with 3 in mid and x pipes, didn't get the cats, and I'm running 'em through stock mufflers. I think it's just right. My friends (one drives a lotus the other a pickup truck) think it's loud. I don't know how the lotus driver can say anything, cause he's always talking about not being able to hear anything cause the motor is the only thing you can hear since its about a foot from your head in that car. If you're gonna keep the magnaflow axle back, I'd go with cats. If you put the old stock mufflers back on, ditch the cats.

I am having this done in the morning, I have a Breathless CAI and muffler Delete http://www.breathlessperformance.com...?productid=727
I am putting in a lingenfelter Gt11 cam, Patroit Gold Xtreme Springs, 1 bolt to 3 bolt cam conversion kit, Long Tube 1.75 inch header with no cats and adding MBPR Mufflers. You do not have to replace your timing chain unless you want to install a better one. I am also having NGK Plugs (1 step colder then stock) MSD Wires and a custom Tune done. I Will post a DYNO Graph when I get it on Friday

Here's the setup for you.

Kook's 1 7/8 headers with high flow cat mid pipes and a Magnaflow Street Catback. It's not loud. It sounds just right. Its nice and aggressive at WOT (sounds great but not too loud), but its nice a quiet while just cruising. Its also not really loud on cold start ups in the morning (so your neighbors will still like you).

I've had loud setups before and I didn't want that for this car.

Myself and many Camaro owners chose the Magnaflow Street catback for that reason. We wanted long tube headers without being really loud.

I hate the look of those big ugly stock mufflers, so they had to go. They're also very heavy. By getting rid of them, I makes your car look better and removes weight.
