Stock computer limits
Guys,
My brother and I were wondering what we could get away with performance wise without needing a computer tune. Obviously it will depend on how far the mass air fuel injection system will compensate. Anyway, we were thinking about JBA shorty headers, catback, and cai. Will the stock computer be able to compensate for all of this?? I know it will always run better with a tune but we would like to keep the stock warranty and were told that as long as we kept the factory cats and stayed in front of the TB on the intake side we would be good. I need to do more research on how the stock system adjusts for airflow differences but the way I understand it, as long as you don't exceed a certain flowrate the stock computer parameters will serve you fine. I would like to know from tuners or anyone who has been down this road before how far we can go. Thanks |

shorty headers, catback, cai should be able to handle it without a problem im pretty sure

Depending on the model of CAI you get, you're fine without a tune. The shorties are debateable on whether they produce any discernable HP and the catback just produces a different sound. Most of the CAI's don't require a tune but you need to pay attention to the description. It should say that a tune is required, if it needs one.

personally if you dont want to get a tune I would recommend some hi flow cats from either JBA or solo, a catback and a cai that doesnt require a tune
If you really want shorty headers then get them too

Well see, the local dealer that we go through said we had to keep the stock cats in place to keep the warranty. If we didn't have to keep the stock cats and they wouldn't void the warranty for a tune, we would do full bolt ons and have it dyno tuned.
So in the mean time we are trying to do the best we can with the stock cats and no computer tune. That's why I thought about the shorty headers, catback, and cai. |

I have done what you are thinking. My car sounds a bit better, and runs a bit better. I wanted to keep my warranty intact so I did not want a tune either. Honestly, the money I spent VS the gains was not worth it. I did dyno my car before and after and my gains are nothing to brag about. Disappointing is a good word to use. AFM really hand cuffs what you can use for a Catback because of drone. Any set will cause drone in one way or another. If I could do it again I would only do an axle back and that's it. Once the warranty is done, or some time down the road I plan to upgrade again with a cam/tune/long tubes/AFM delete/Borla S catback. I have the MBRP catback now. I am happy with it, but I love that Borla sound. Borla system cause bad drone with AFM. You have to find catbacks that are designed for the automatics. These systems have a performance resonator that will replace the factory one. These resonators still quiet the car too much, but it is a compromise because the drone AFM causes. CAI's, I am not 100% convinced on them either, but I installed a RotoFab and I like it. The car has a bit of a deeper sound. I am Canadian. All the bolt ons cost me about $2400. In the end, the sound is a little better and performance is a little better, but not enough to justify spending that kind of money. My gains were only about 10 hp peak, and 15 overall average. I was looking for about 25, but is only a fantasy. Also, if your local dealer gives you their blessing to install stuff like this and they will still do warranty, then fine. But warranty can be denied by the dealer if they feel the car has been modified too far. (not meaning to start an argument). What I am saying is, if you want the keep the warranty/factory tune, save your money for something else.
