Voiding the powertrain warranty

I had a conversation today with a manager from GM about voiding the warranty. A little background this person is a family friend and trusted source. He stated that GM has begun a push and has told dealers to not honor any warranty work when any major part has been changed to anything other then a GM part. He stated something such as a CAI, any exhaust changes, etc would make the warranty useless. He also talked about how if they can prove you were on a track or in any competition with your car, it would also void your warranty. To sum it all up, he said as GM has looked to trim cost, somebody had the bright idea to try to limit warranty work and save money there and they are getting aggressive about it, to the point they are willing to go to court over the matter. Take it for what you want, but just passing on the information given to me.

When in the history of car manufacturing has modifying your car's drivetrain or powerplant NOT invalidated the warranty? As stated before, GM and all manufacturers spend a whole heck of alot of money engineering these things. A tweak here, change there will inevitably change the status quo of the engine/drivetrain and upset the proverbial applecart. Seems to me that is why car manufacturers have regional reps or referees. It is also why Chevrolet has their aftermarket performance store!

Thats why I did not add a cai and went with the SLP Blackwing and my car is at GM getting the GM preformance exhaust installed because I am worried about voiding my powertrain warranty.

There are laws to prevent this. If GM wants to void the warranty because of a CAI, they have to prove that the CAI actually caused the problem. Would they actually take the owner to court? Maybe, who knows? Would they win? If the CAI didn't cause the problem, probably not.

I'm not a lawyer, but a little research on the topic should backup the above statement.

I thought I read something in the manual that you can race the car after 1500 miles and that they recommend you change the fluid in the rear. Why would GM make cars like the camaro and corvette with launch control ect and then say you can't race the car!
