I'm eating cake right now. See my post 2 posts above yours. You're right, it's not magic. It's a known trick that can be used to fool the computer into thinking the cats are functioning correctly. It worked for me and it has successfully worked for others.

Everyone says it is a matter of time before they come on. I am glad yours have not. That would be a good thing if what you did would be a permanent fix. You are leaving quite a few hp out by not tunning.

Yeah, I know I've left some HP on the table by not getting it tuned. I'm using a custom fabbed extender that is stainless steel and 2" long. I'm not using drilled out spark plug antifoulers which is the common "duct tape and bailing wire" solution. So maybe that's the difference.

I have 1 7/8 kooks LTs with catless connection pipes and magnaflow 3" catback and have not had a CEL for well over a month. But it really don't matter to me because my cam will be going in soon and I will be forced to get a tune.

That won't work for these cars! As I understand it...once you tune...there is a permanent record of it on the ECM. Yes, you can tune it back to the stock parameters, but that record that it was changed will always be there. So the dealership will know you messed with it.....and deny any powertrain warranty claims. Bottom Line = If you want to retain your warranty......DON'T MESS WITH TUNING!!!.......it's as simple as that!

I was always under the impression that if you are installing LT's a tune was a must because there's a possibility of running lean because the stock prog can't compensate enough. Is this true with our cars? Or can you run the common bolt ons of intake, LT's and exhaust without a tune and not see any long term problems. A little off topic but i think it applies.

I was thinking the same thing... but than again, IS tunning a bad thing? How many people tune their cars and worry about the warranty? But I feel your pain, maybe LT's were not the best mod to keep your warranty. When I get my car, the drive train warranty is the 1st thing I kill, LOL!!

My guess is your best bet is to go with shorties and high flow midpipes. I believe people have had success with these and no codes.

I've read that shorties and highflow midpipes don't throw any codes when using the extenders. It seems from the post above that hicompression is using LT's with them and no codes.

I think the issue that is a little more dangerous is running lean, not throwing a CEL.

The front O2 sensors are before the cats. They are the air/fuel sensors. It doesn't matter if you remove the cats or not. The front sensors don't know whether they are there or not anyway. They are the ones controlling the air/fuel mixture by sampling the exhaust gases coming straight out of the combustion chamber.

The O2 sensors behind the cats are checking to see if the cats are working. That's all they do. They sample the exhaust gases after the cats and tell the computer to pop a code if they sense too much pollutants. They don't control air fuel.

So, no. You will not run lean by installing longtube headers with no cats.
