I'm from SETex myself and have family all over Louisiana... I was about to post up that "some" people take it as a racial slur, not just to Cajuns, but there's a small percentage of people that feel it was derogatory to people of African descent as well.. I didn't even know that one until I move to Illinois and someone made a comment. They were offended until I explained where I was from and how we all use the term.. It's a Cajun Redneck.. and most of us are proud to wear the badge...

Same thing happened the first time I let the wife drive it.

There is hope that this can be repaired.

In regards to African Americans taking offense, I believe the term you are thinking about is Creole, Not Coon-Ass.

I have many Black/African American/Creole friends in Louisiana. They word they have the heated debate over is the term "Creole". Not Coon-Ass.

Furthermore if any of them take offense to the word "Coon-Ass" because there is the word coon (Short for Racoon) in it then, I should start punching people in the mouth for asking me to pass them a "cracker". I do not believe in racial slander, however I am not going to omit non slanderous words from my vocabulary because someone who is hypersensitive takes offense to them.
