Question RS Running Lights

I hate the look of daytime running lights. Yes, I know that I can switch them off but I have to do it EVERY TIME I get in the car. If I have to have them I'd rather that they be amber like the ones on my Colorado pickup.

So the question is this: Have any of you changed the bulbs in your RS running lights to amber ones? If so, how difficult is it and are these bulbs hard to find?

I guess I am use to them. They were on my 2001 Camaro. Never wired them out.

ALL RIGHT PENNOR!!!
Without intending to you have provided a great idea!!!

Just this morning I was at the shop of one of the suppliers/service mechanics I usually trust for my cars. They also represent PIAA car light systems and wheels.

I will go back tomorrow and ask him what other color/type of bulb they can offer for my car whcih can be installed WHITOUT having to make any mods (like changing the wiring harness or adding any amplifiers) : just what do they have that is plug 'n play.

Like yourself I'm not too hapy with the standard DRL's, but which bother me is not that they are on, is just the plain color they came in.

When I get an answer I'll post it here.

Anyway, your's was an insightful post in that it never occured to me to just switch the bulb.

Previously I considered replacinmg the whole lamp assembly, but hesitated due to the ridiculous expense and the uncertainity I get from allowing my car to be a guinea pig in some "adaptation" experiment (there are very CAMAROS in town so nobody has any experience on them yet).

Drive smart,

It must be just me, but I love the DRL on the RS- to me I can spot a Camaro a mile away with those on. A different color might be kind of cool, but I love the DRL's.

I may have opened my own can of worms here.

I spent much of the afternoon searching for P13W light bulbs only to find nothing at all other than the LED replacements that have been advertised here on this site. What I was hoping to find were some standard P13W's in amber. What I found is that doesn't even seem to be possible to find replacements in white should one of them burn out. None of the auto parts sites like Autozone, Knects, NAPA, etc have them at all. A GOOGLE search turned up nothing other than it appears that Philips makes them for GM, but finding an after-market source turned up nothing. Those expensive LED replacements come in white, amber and blue, but I found some rather unhappy customers who tried them only to have them burn up after a few hours of use.

Now I'm wondering what the deal is using a light bulb that NOBODY in the world seems to stock and only one foreign manufacturer makes. What engineering genius at GM thought that one up?

How could lights you can't even see on the front of your vehicle while you're driving (that help you to be more visible to those around you) bug you? I don't get it.

I agree. This is a fantastic idea.

Thanks for the concept, Pennor!

We gotta find a way to replace the standard bulbs with Amber ones.

(I loved the DRL's in the Turn Signals on my 4th Gen... the white color just looks like you left your lights on. Amber would look like the DRLs on the 4th gen!)

I found what we need for this... look for Amber Bulb paint or amber bulb "dip" or Amber Bulb Laquer. There are many places that make this stuff. I have not researched it completely as we need to find the right type for the high temperature bulbs. I know this is the right track.

The light switch on the dash... Turn it counter clockwise. It's spring loaded and will go back to the center position. But that turn deactivates the automatic lights for the current trip only. The DIC will display a warning that the auto lights have been turned off, but that both deactivates the daytime running lights as well as the automatic head lights if it should get darker. The lights return to the factory configuration the next time the car is started.
