Custom Grind Cam vs. Cam off the shelf
I'm considering adding cam into the equation when I have my Whipple supercharger installed. My question is, should I do a custom grind with a forced induction setup, or should I just purchase a cam off the shelf?
My knowledge on this subject is limited. I have looked at custom grind order forms, but I don't know the answers to 90% of the questions they ask on them. So, if any of vendors would like to make a cam recommendation to me via PM, that would be great. Here's what my setup is: LS3 Whipple Supercharger with stock pulley (probably 7 to 8lbs of boost) Long tubes Car is daily driver (drive ability is a must) |

Lots of people think because something is custom grind it's automatically better. The thing with our off the shelf stuff is we have tested tons of different combinations & put together camshafts that work the best possible for certain goals & mod configurations. We are working on whipple & maggie camshafts on the engine dyno very soon!

I agree with Matt. Off the shelf stuff is tried and true. If you're 100% positive that your builder is cutting edge, it may be ok for him to go a little extreme. How else would we learn what makes more/less power. Just know that you'll be the guinea pig for that particular grind. If you're just wanting some more power with good driveablity, i'd go with something that's tried and true.

It all depends on the situation. "Off the shelf" cams from the majority of vendors have plenty of R&D behind them for certain combos. I'm sure some of them have cams available for your application that will work well. Custom grind cams are good for very specific applications and custom heads, etc. The person that designs the cam has to know what they're doing though. Just because it's a custom grind doesn't mean they're worth a damn.

Even the off the shelf LS9 cam would be great with your mods.
The fact that it needs no spring change also keeps the price under $200. Otherwise, if you are looking for more power, stay tuned to what the market brings after SEMA. ![]() Ivan @ Southwest Speed |
