When you start reving the engine harder, or start making more power and using it, adding a supercharger etc. then Absolutely. Oil control at slow engine speeds is no problem for the rings, and gets worse as the revs go up, more blow by occurs and more oil vapor is created and separating those oil vapors from the PCV system can be Nothing But POSITIVE. Ted.

Question for those running a 160 thermostat. What's your coolant temperature range after the engine is totally warmed up? I have the stock thermostat in and the coolant temps range from 189 to 202 degrees. This is with a tune so my fans come on sooner. From memory, I think the all stock the numbers were 200 to 212.

I am not really here to have a pissing match with anyone over T-stats. I will tell you on my own cars, they run about 20 degrees cooler with the Thermostats. In terms of performance, and SOTP driving, it is a not something you are gonna notice. However the LS motors like to be cool..and anything you can do to help that is a plus. They are to oposite of the Hemi motors in that respect..put a 160 in a Hemi, and it will be useless. It's cheap, makes your car run a little cooler, and is harmless.
All that being said, I mean this really is not a prove why it works kind of thing. SLP and Lingenfelter have been selling and putting these T-stats in their cars for years. Those two shops along have built thousands of high performance LSX cars. I have been selling LS parts now for 7 years, and have dealt with dozens of tuners, and thousands of customers and the consensus has been that there is no real down side even if you're not gonna see huge results. If anyone has any real concerns over the product, I think if you go over on some of the really technical LS forums dedicated to this stuff, you will get a pretty good consensus. |

My feelings on the thermostats are this. If the vehicle is supercharged which mine is), and/or you live in the desert southwest, or deep south (which I do) where several months the ambient temps are in the 90's, I would run a 160 stat (which I do). If I lived in the mid states I would consider a 180 degree and if I lived in the northern states I would keep the 192 stat. I am not only concerned with the coolant temps but also my oil pressure and oil temp and transmission oil temp. My experiences in southern Florida are this: My oil temp comes right up to 220 degrees within about five minutes of driving and my transmission temp goes up to 180 degrees and almost never anything higher. My coolant temps will vary based on how hard the car is driven from about 176 to about 192.

How do you know that LS motors Like to Be cool? People sell MILLIONS of pills on the internet too, doesn't mean they work. I want to hear, WHY ARE 160 STATS BENEFICIAL, AND NO ONE HAS STEPPED UP with any technical data to support such claims. Like you don't see the down side, I don't see the up side, except to sell product. Same goes for TR6 Plugs, The cars run like Crap with them but everyone still sells them. I have had numerous complaints of driveability from other shops installing TR6 spark plugs, I have the customer reinstall they're stock plugs and Magically the Car runs Perfect again. ASK Any Professional Engine builder, and I am not talking your average Joe engine builder, I am talking Nascar, Bush North, etc. engine builders what temp they run they're engines at for the most Grueling Test of an engine they're is. 210-230 is what I hear all the time. Ted.

Thanks HtownSS. So you are running about 7 degrees cooler than I am. Normal driving I'm 189 to 194. Temperature climbs in traffic maxxing out at 202. I guess the debate will continue, I personaly don't see what's to gain from several degrees but I may be wrong. It's a bigger difference if everything is stock, about a 17 degree swing on the cooler side. Are you tuned with the fans coming on earlier?

SLP's product description seems to make it sound like they beleive in them- http://www.slponline.com/view_product.asp?P=100229 On the TR6 plugs, they are one step colder for forced induction or nitrous. I have them on my Magnacharged GTO and they run great. Only time we ever get complaints on them is when people crack them installing. Tuning I would think plays a part in how an engine runs witha certain plug..especially FI. |

I believe ted is referring to when people run them for nitrous. The TR6 is a projected tip, which isn't ideal for running with nitrous, yet a lot of people do it because "the internet said so". More people have better luck with the br's
